Team Cherry's Hollow Knight is a gorgeous Metroidvania title that was positively received by the vast majority of those who have played it. Players particularly enjoyed the game's combat system, gorgeous art style, and foreboding challenge. In 2019, fans of the indie title rejoiced at the announcement of the sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong.

The follow-up game will feature a new protagonist, Hornet, an important character from the previous game. While this game is very much like its predecessor, it also has a lot of new elements and mechanics many players are excited about. Here are some things in Hollow Knight: Silksong those who are looking forward to it should know about it.

10 The Importance Of The Title

The game's subtitle, Silksong, plays a heavy emphasis on the game's themes and story. The sequel will take the players away from Hallownest and take them to a new kingdom of Pharloom, an area said to be ruled by Silk and Song.

What this exactly means is still yet to be seen. However, most of the enemies in the game, or at least, those that have already been shown, wear musical instruments as armors and excrete threads of silk when hit.

9 Opposite Progression

Hollow Knight: Silksong tools

In Hollow Knight, the player descends deeper underground as they traverse Hallownest and discover everything there is to see in the world. Interestingly, the progression in Silksong is a stark contrast to that of its predecessor.

Instead of descending, Hornet will need to ascend Pharloom to find out why she was brought to this kingdom. The entire progression of Silksong is the opposite of Hollow Knight, making both journeys subtly antithetical.

8 Silk Instead Of Souls

The Knight in the previous game relied on Souls to activate his spells, abilities, and to heal. Hornet, on the other hand, will rely on silk. In Silksong, silk essentially functions similarly as Souls did in the previous game.

There are a ton of silk poles in the game the player can attack to gather more silk, in place of soul totems from the previous game. When Hornet perishes, she will leave behind a cocoon of silk.

7 Quests

The way quests work in Silksong is quite different from how they did in the first game. In this game, the player has the liberty of accessing a quest board, streamlining the game's questing mechanic.

The only types of quests that have been revealed in the trailers thus far are the following:

  • Gather - Fetch quests.
  • Hunt - Assassination quests.
  • Wayfarer - Not known as of yet.
  • Grand Hunt - Similar to hunt, with higher-profile targets.

6 Hornet's Skills The Knight Didn't Have

Hornet has a myriad of abilities that are unique to the character. Unlike the Knight, Hornet can sprint, grab ledges, dash forward, and diagonally into the air. She also has a unique movement variation where she uses all of her limbs to crawl, making her move faster. She can also heal so much faster than the Knight.

Hornet also does an offensive move where she hovers in the air and spools of silk dance around her, damaging anything they touch. Many of these are movements and attacks she was already shown doing in the previous game.

5 The Tools

In Silksong, instead of using charms, Hornet uses tools. What's even more incredible is that the player seems to have the chance to craft these tools themselves. Tools take up crests instead of notches, and these also function differently from the previous game.

The trailer and demo already showed a few tools the player will be able to use. One tool functions as a bomb. Another summons a spiked ball, an attack Hornet does in the previous game. There's another that summons little companions for Hornet. Finally, there's also a tool that summons an incredible rolling buzzsaw.

4 Returning Systems And Mechanics

The most notable gameplay systems from the first game that make a return in Silksong are the Mask Shards and benches. The Mask Shards mechanic basically functions the same as the first game, with the only difference being it relying on silk instead of soul.

The bench system also remains the same. They act as the game's checkpoint where the player returns to after having all of their HP depleted. It is also where they can equip and change tools.

3 Currencies And Collectible

There are two types of new currencies for the players to collect in Silksong: the Shell Shards and Rosaries. Shell Shards are needed to craft tools, the game's replacement to charms. Rosaries, on the other hand, is Pharloom's main currency.

The player will need Rosaries to purchase goods in Silksong. They will also lose the Rosary Beads they have up upon death. However, they can keep some Beads on strings to prevent them from losing.

2 Hornet Has Dialogue

One of Hornet's distinctive attributes that were absent with the Knight is her ability to communicate. While the Knight was more of a silent protagonist, Hornet actually has dialogue in which she engages with other NPCs and bosses.

Giving Hornet dialogue makes the character more grounded and relatable. Players can also look forward to charming back-and-forth as they read exactly what the protagonist is thinking about at every interaction.

1 How It Ties In With The Previous Game

While it is unknown exactly how Silksong's story will tie in with the previous one, especially in regards to Hollow Knight's multiple endings, it is known that the game will explore Hornet's past.

As most players know, Hornet is the daughter of the Pale King and Herrah the Beast. If Silksong will explore the main character's past, perhaps it will also feature the Pale King once again. Whether or not the Knight will make a reappearance in the sequel is yet unrevealed.
