Hollow Knight was one of the most successful indie games of the decade. Now, there's a sequel brewing at Team Cherry, with Hollow Knight: Silksong following Hornet in the mysterious kingdom of Pharloom. Hollow Knight and Hollow Knight: Silksong appear to share quite a few similarities that branch out in different ways, with one of the most interesting being Hollow Knight's descent into the depths of Hollownest and Hornet's ascending journey in the sequel, from the grottos to the citadel.

Another striking resemblance is that the first boss in Hollow Knight and Silksong are both matriarch insects of different species, with a lot more in common than what meets the eye. These bosses are the Gruz Mother and the Moss Mother, respectively, with the latter likely echoing the former in the sequel to introduce the game through similar mechanics and setting a parallel mood for Silksong's first hour or so. Another little detail that long-time fans of the first Hollow Knight game will recognize is that the Moss Mother is found in an area called "Old Church," and the Gruz Mother was originally going to be found in another church-like environment that was eventually changed.

Similarities and Differences Between Hollow Knight's Gruz Mother and Silksong's Moss Mother

Hollow Knight Silksong Sharpe

With both Hollow Knight's Gruz Mother and Silksong's Moss Mother being their species' matriarchs, these fights include their offspring as smaller enemies, albeit in a different capacity. The Gruz Mother doesn't actually summon any ally during the fight, but rather a bunch of Gruzzers spawn from her stomach after she is killed, whereas the Moss Mother actively summons a couple of moss worms every once in a while. Both bosses fly during their respective encounters, with the Gruz Mother displaying a more frenzied flight and the Moss Mother being more in control of it, which shows during her attacks.

Speaking of attack patterns, there are some similarities that these two bosses share. The Gruz Mother can perform a small charge attack that makes her tackle the Knight. If she misses, she can either stop the movement or collide with the wall or the floor, depending on the initial direction of the charge. The Gruz Mother's second attack is her slamming her body repeatedly against the floor and the ceiling as if she was bouncing, and while the pattern can rather easily be spotted by players, this can still be a very dangerous assault.

On the other hand, the Moss Mother's first attack is not too different from the Gruz Mother's charge, with her diving down from above and trying to hit Hornet with her stinger. This move can be particularly harmful if the players don't take care of the moss worms that the Moss Mother summons from time to time with her other attack. As a matter of fact, the Moss Mother can thrash her head against the ceiling, not unlike the Gruz Mother's slam attack, but this has a different outcome in Silksong. The Moss Mother's headbutt can have one of two effects: one summons the moss worms, the other causes 3 stalactites to fall from the roof of the grotto.

Overall, there are several elements that these two bosses have in common, and Hollow Knight players will likely be pleased to fight the Moss Mother when Silksong releases, albeit there is no official information about when that might happen.
