The web domain for Hollow Knight: Silksong appears to have accidentally been allowed to expire by developer Team Cherry. Announcements regarding the development status of Hollow Knight: Silksong are few and far between, leaving fans to make jokes about the highly anticipated Metroidvania turning into vaporware. But few expected Team Cherry to unintentionally contribute to the joke by forgetting to renew its Hollow Knight: Silksong web domain.

Hollow Knight: Silksong was announced in February 2019, now four years ago. It was originally planned as a DLC expansion for Hollow Knight, allowing players to play through the game as the character Hornet. Team Cherry eventually decided to expand the DLC into a full project and has largely remained radio silent as development continued since. In June 2022, Xbox announced that Hollow Knight: Silksong would be released within the next 12 months, but as June approaches, a 2023 launch is less and less certain.

Hollow Knight Silksong's Website Mistake Highlights The Long Wait For The Game

Watchful fans of Hollow Knight noticed on Friday that Hollow Knight: Silksong's official website had gone down. Fans were hopeful at the time that it meant Team Cherry would be updating the website with new information. That proved untrue, however, as those looking up the website's domain information found the registry had simply expired. It wasn't just a meme anymore, but the situation was nonetheless quite funny to Hollow Knight fans.

A Discord post from Team Cherry later confirmed that there was an "issue" with the old Hollow Knight: Silksong domain. For the time being, the website would be connected to the silksong.com URL, instead. Whether Team Cherry will be able to reclaim its old URL for Hollow Knight: Silksong isn't clear, but it's possible it's just a technical error that might be solved relatively quickly, too.

Hollow Knight fans are making the joke that even Team Cherry has forgotten about the development of Silksong, but the truth is probably that everyone figured the website's domain would simply renew automatically, or that someone else was responsible for the website. With everyone so focused on finishing Hollow Knight: Silksong, it's understandable that things might slip through the cracks.

Team Cherry is self-publishing Hollow Knight: Silksong, after all. While a publisher would typically take care of marketing-related things like running a website, Team Cherry has to do that itself. With that said, losing a website URL that's been in use for years is still a notable loss. That's a website that fans have bookmarked, and that Google knows to point fans toward. Still, it's probably safe to assume that when a release date for Hollow Knight: Silksong is announced, fans will be plenty excited regardless of the game's website URL.

Hollow Knight: Silksong is in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch. Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
