Following numerous delays, open world Harry Potter action-RPG Hogwarts Legacy is finally coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles on Friday, May 5. Hogwarts Legacy made its debut on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X this past February, smashing sales records and earning critical acclaim to become indisputably one of 2023's biggest new game releases.

Originally, the plan was for Hogwarts Legacy to make its debut as a cross-gen game, with PS4 and Xbox One versions to release on the same as their PS5 and Xbox Series X counterparts. Unfortunately for Harry Potter fans that have yet to upgrade to new hardware, the last-gen version of Hogwarts Legacy was delayed from February to April, and then pushed back yet again from April to May.

Unless a last-minute delay happens, the Hogwarts Legacy PS4 and Xbox One release date is set for Friday, May 5. Come that day, the floodgates will be opened for millions of more gamers to try Hogwarts Legacy for themselves, which in turn could result in a big sales boost for the game. Hogwarts Legacy has mostly dominated sales charts since its debut in February, but making it accessible to the millions of people who own PS4s and Xbox Ones but not the newer consoles could be huge.

While Hogwarts Legacy finally coming to PS4 and Xbox One could mean a great deal for the game's already impressive sales, there are some concerns about the last-gen ports. They really haven't been shown in action, and so there is some worry that the PS4 and Xbox One versions will be poorly optimized. After all, the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of Hogwarts Legacy are able to take advantage of those consoles' increased power, allowing for lightning fast load times that make things like fast-traveling and the like far less tedious than they would be otherwise. That won't be possible on PS4 and Xbox One.

Hogwarts Legacy has a vast open world that the PS4 and Xbox One may struggle to keep up with as well, but that remains to be seen. It's possible that the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game will run perfectly fine, in which case May 5 will be an even bigger day for Hogwarts Legacy. Time will tell, and luckily fans on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One don't have to wait too much longer to find out for themselves.

Hogwarts Legacy finally coming to PS4 and Xbox One on May 5 isn't even the end of its release plans. There's also a Nintendo Switch version of Hogwarts Legacy on the way as well, but Nintendo gamers will have to wait until July 25 for their version of the game.

Hogwarts Legacy is out now for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X with PS4 and Xbox One versions coming May 5 and a Nintendo Switch port dropping July 25.
