The recently released Hogwarts Legacy is proving to be a hit with many, with the title providing one of the most expansive and thorough gameplay experiences of the popular IP that has ever been curated. With the game of course having an array of culturally significant books and films to draw inspiration from as source material, there are many preconceptions of how many players may engage with the title and its offered storylines.

When considering this, one of the most defining decisions that players have to make within Hogwarts Legacy relates to what Hogwarts house the player chooses to be sorted into. However, with player stats now becoming available for the title, the most popular in-game house for Legacy is somewhat of a surprise when considering what house has historically been regarded as the most high-profile and recognizable.

The Houses of Hogwarts Legacy

At the beginning of a Hogwarts Legacy playthrough, players have to choose between Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff for their school house. This is an important choice that players have to make, as the house players end up in influences a player's gear color, common room, socialization opportunities, and even quest lines.

Playthroughs of Hogwarts Legacy are essentially characterized by a player's choice of house, with a high amount of replayability being present in re-experiencing the game's story via the lens of other houses in subsequent playthroughs. With the recently released Hogwarts Legacy already surprising many with its intense popularity, the data regarding what the title's most popular in-game house is has come as a surprise to many fans.

Recent data shows that Slytherin is the most popular house in Hogwarts Legacy, with more players having unlocked the Slytherin playthrough achievement/trophy more frequently than any other house-related achievement/trophy as things stand. While this does come as a surprise to many, there are some obvious allures of the Slytherin house that help contextualize this player trend.

Stereotypically, Slytherin is the house most associated with evil and dark magic in the Harry Potter universe, with some of the IPs most sinister figures being Slytherin alumni, such as Lord Voldemort. With this in mind, many players will be drawn to Slytherin playthroughs to better suit a "dark" playthrough of Hogwarts Legacy, with the title allowing players to use forbidden spells such as Avada Kedavra and subsequently fostering a huge amount of moral freedom for the player.

The surprise in this data comes from the preconceptions of house choice that stemmed from the other main narratives of the Harry Potter franchise. The main characters of the franchise's books and films all belong to house Gryffindor, with the main trio of Harry, Ron, and Hermione all being members of the iconic red and gold house. Many fans align themselves with Gryffindor because of the narrative importance of the house, with many thinking that most playthroughs would be through a Gryffindor lens because of this.

With Slytherin arguably being the second most popular house in the overall franchise, its position as Hogwarts Legacy's most popular house is not a massively blindsiding surprise, but is a surprise nonetheless. Although the prestige and popularity of Gryffindor is an attractive aspect for many, the sleeker and more morally ambiguous nature of Slytherin has clearly proven to be a more alluring choice for many due to the moral freedom that it gives Hogwarts Legacy players.

Hogwarts Legacy is available now on PS5, Xbox Series S|X, and PC. PS4, Xbox One, and Switch versions are currently in development.
