Merlin trials are introduced to Hogwarts Legacy players fairly early on in the game by Nora Treadwell, and for the most part, they are relatively easy to solve. Usually, players just need to light some braziers with Confringo or cast Reparo to fix some broken statues. That said, some Merlin Trials are more annoying than others, especially the butterfly Merlin Trials that players will encounter as they solve the old wizard's puzzles.

These require players to use Lumos to attract a swarm of butterflies or moths and lead them back to a stone pillar. While this is hardly difficult, these are some of the most time-consuming Merlin Trial variants, but this simple trick makes these trials much more bearable.

Merlin Trials are completely optional, so players are able to ignore all but the first one if they so choose. However, if Hogwarts Legacy players want to increase their available gear slots at all, they are going to need to find and solve several Merlin Trials during their adventures.

When most players complete the butterfly Merlin Trials, the tendency is to go to each group of butterflies individually and bring them back to a stone pillar one at a time. What many players don't know is that it is actually possible to collect all three swarms of butterflies at the same time with Lumos.

After doing this, players just need to head back to the stone pillars and walk past them to deposit all three groups and complete the Merlin Trial. This one tip can save a ton of time, as it means players won't need to run back and forth three times just to complete the trial. This is but one of many secret uses for Lumos, the Wand-Lighting Charm.

Aside from this, there are a few other things that might make these trials easier. For starters, finding the butterfly swarms is much easier at night since their blue glow can be harder to see in the daytime. Hogwarts Legacy players can advance time from the world map if they have trouble finding them.

Other than this, the best thing players can do is plan out a route to walk back to the stone pillars, as climbing or mounting the broom will end the Lumos spell and cause the butterflies to stop following the player. Hopefully, these tricks help players complete these Merlin Trials and earn their bonus inventory slots quicker.

Hogwarts Legacy is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X, with a Switch version coming on July 25th.
