A couple of Hogwarts Legacy players had a pretty disappointing surprise after they spent hours trying to open a treasure chest that picked their attention. They shared the story today, criticizing Hogwarts Legacy’s mechanics for deciding the type of loot inside each chest.

Hogwarts Legacy achieved success by bringing Hogwarts to life as an open-world experience. Its world is packed with secrets, so it’s normal for players to expect to find them in unusual spots. Sometimes, the thrill of the discovery can be hidden behind a fireplace in Hogwarts that doubles as a secret passage, other times it’s a well-hidden chest or even a creative puzzle with special rewards.

Now, two Hogwarts Legacy gamers were the protagonists of a hilarious story about how sometimes a chest is just a chest. Reddit user WeezyWally and their girlfriend shared their quest about a mysterious treasure box located behind a statue in the Slytherin common room. According to the post, the girlfriend had been playing for over 35 hours and saw a Level 3 chest. To get it, they decided to hunt down Demiguise Statues for two hours in order to get the Level 3 Alohomora spell, which could be used to open and help her snatch the treasure. Everything was happening according to plan, with the expectation that the treasure would be worthwhile, but instead they found some lousy brown leather gloves, which were not even one of the best gloves available in Hogwarts Legacy.

Redditors mostly agreed with WeezyWally’s remarks about how bad the loot system is, affirming that the loot tables are awful, and the whole system needs a complete overhaul. While players can watch out for the specific shapes in Hogwarts Legacy treasure chests to know what they offer, the results continue to be underwhelming most of the time. This is such a widespread opinion that user Boozypanda even complained that they completely stopped chasing after Treasure Vaults icons on the map because they only yield useless items. However, others users still do it, as they hate to see the unexplored icons on their maps.

Problems with bland treasure rewards are not the only complaint that Hogwarts Legacy gamers have about the current state of the game. Recently, another player shared how long it takes to watch all 95 Merlin Trial cutscenes. At the time, others criticized these scenes for being unskippable and simply taking too long when the player is doing many in a row.

Hogwarts Legacy is out now for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S with PS4 and Xbox One versions coming April 4 and a Switch release dropping July 25.
