Set in the 1890s, Hogwarts Legacy places players in a never-before-seen version of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and allows them to explore to their heart's content. While exploring the vast wizarding world, it is possible to stumble upon a variety of interesting items, but some are harder to find than others.

While the Moonstones available in Hogwarts Legacy aren't exactly hard to find, collecting the amount players need will likely take them a great deal of time and effort. Thankfully, there is a way to get a lot of them if the player is willing to bide their time.

What Do Moonstones Do?

Moonstones can be found at any point while exploring the vast world of Hogwarts Legacy, but players won't learn their purpose until later in the story. They become vital ingredients during the seventeenth main quest, The Room of Requirement, from which the player will gain access to their own personal room that they can customize to their liking.

Sadly, customizing this room requires Moonstones to be spent in exchange for decorative items, so it might take some time before players can design the room the way they want to.

Finding Moonstones

Upon gaining access to the Room of Requirements, players can begin changing what the room looks like by removing certain preset decorations. Using the Evanesco spell on these decorations will reimburse players with some Moonstones, which allows for some immediate customizations to be made if the player knows what they want.

Sadly, this method of obtaining Moonstones is limited, so players will need to set out into the world of Hogwarts Legacy if they wish to acquire more. Thankfully, Moonstones can be found quite regularly by exploring areas outside the Castle and can all be obtained by dislodging them with a well-aimed spell. They are easy to detect due to their unusual crystal shapes, but collecting them in bulk can be a pretty slow process.

Moonstones harvested from the world will also respawn after enough time has passed, so players should be sure to take note of everywhere they find them if they hope to make the most out of each harvesting area. For the most part, these particular Moonstones tend to spawn in outdoor areas like forests and mountains, and while players should collect them whenever they see them, there is a better way to amass a large amount of them that requires significantly less effort.

Farming Moonstones

Material Refiner Spellcraft in Hogwarts Legacy

The best way to acquire large amounts of Moonstones in Hogwarts Legacy for players who don't want to search for them is to let them accumulate passively. To do this, players must journey to Hogsmeade and enter the Tomes and Scrolls shop located at the southernmost point of the village. Inside, players can purchase the Material Refiner, a handy Spellcraft that creates Moonstones every ten minutes.

A total of three Material Refiners can be placed in the Room of Requirement, but seeing as one costs 1,500 Galleons to purchase, it can be a steep price to pay for some. Once three Material Refiners have been placed in the Room of Requirement, though, players will be able to passively obtain Moonstones, making it unnecessary for them to seek the crystals out in the world.

Hogwarts Legacy is available now on PS5, Xbox Series S|X, and PC. PS4, Xbox One, and Switch versions are currently in development.
