Hogwarts Legacy players interested in expanding their gear and storage slots will need to complete Merlin Trials, only accessible after reaching a certain point in the game's main story. Hogwarts Legacy follows in the footsteps many other action-RPGs, with players able to collect color-coded gear of varying rarity and quality to outfit their characters. Acquiring new and more powerful gear is necessary for success in Hogwarts Legacy, and players should find plenty while exploring the game's massive open world.

In Hogwarts Legacy, players can equip handwear, facewear, headwear, neckwear, cloaks and robes, and an outfit, all of which influence one's stats. This gear is acquired through various means; sometimes players can loot gear from chests, other times they can get them as rewards for completing quests in Hogwarts Legacy. At the start of Hogwarts Legacy, players only have 20 slots to hold gear, and so they may be anxious to increase their slots.

Hogwarts Legacy players that want to increase their gear slots will need to progress in the main story far enough to get to the Trials of Merlin quest. After completing the Trials of Merlin quest, they will then be able to access the titular trials whenever they come across them in the game world. The trials are clearly marked on the Hogwarts Legacy map, so players should have no trouble finding them. Upon arrival, players will have to activate the trials using Mallow Sweet, and then solve a short puzzle.

The next step is for players to go to the Challenges menu in their Hogwarts Legacy field guide. Click on Exploration, and then scroll down to the Merlin Trials tab. Players will be rewarded with extra gear slots for completing two Merlin Trials, then more for completing six, and so on and so forth. Players must claim the rewards from the Challenges menu to actually increase their gear slots in Hogwarts Legacy.

What to Do When Your Gear Slots Are Full in Hogwarts Legacy

It's highly likely that Hogwarts Legacy players will run into situations where their gear slots are full. At this point, they have two options. One, Hogwarts Legacy players can go to their unwanted gear and destroy it by clicking in the left stick. The better option is to visit a shop in Hogsmeade and sell any excess gear, as gold is extremely useful in Hogwarts Legacy. But for times when Hogwarts Legacy players are out and about and can't quickly return to Hogsmeade to unload their loot, destroying items will be the way to go.

Hogwarts Legacy launches February 10 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X, April 4 for PS4 and Xbox One, and July 25 for Switch.
