Last week's PlayStation State of Play brought Harry Potter fans a wealth of information on the upcoming singleplayer adventure game Hogwarts Legacy. From the spells players can use to a look at some of the game's open-world, Hogwarts Legacy has a lot to offer Harry Potter fans who are looking for an authentic Hogwarts experience. Until the State of Play reveal, Hogwarts Legacy hadn't shown much in terms of how the game would play and what it would include. Now though, fans of the Wizarding World have plenty to look forward to in the upcoming title.
Some have even said that there may be too much content coming to Hogwarts Legacy, with worries growing around developer Avalanche spreading itself too thin. Many though, are still very hyped for the upcoming release of the game, especially where the Hogwarts Legacy's story is concerned. Set long before the events of the books and movies, Hogwarts Legacy takes players to the 1800s, meaning that even old characters like Dumbledore are highly unlikely to appear.
For some fans, this distance from both the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts franchises is a good thing, as it will allow an entirely new story to be told. However, this does not mean that Hogwarts Legacy won't have some nods to famous Harry Potter characters. From the snippets of story that were revealed at the State of Play event, viewers were shown the villains of the game. Victor Rookwood is a dark wizard and Ranrok the goblin leads the goblin rebellion. Already, due to Rookwood's status as a dark wizard, some fans are already connecting him to Voldemort's Death Eaters.
100 years pass between the time of Hogwarts Legacy and the main Harry Potter books though, so some are questioning how Voldemort can fit into this story. It's highly unlikely Voldemort will appear physically in Hogwarts Legacy, though many are connecting Victor Rookwood to one of the former's Death Eaters, known as Augustus Rookwood. Augustus only appears briefly in the main Harry Potter story, though many believe that the shared surname will connect the villain in Hogwarts Legacy to the main Harry Potter story and Voldemort.
Besides dark wizards appearing in Hogwarts Legacy, the game has other ways of letting players dabble with the dark side of magic. Among the many spells available in the new title, some were surprised to see that dark magic spells, such as the killing curse, being available for players to use. While it does offer freedom for the player, many believe allowing dark magic should come at a cost for players in Hogwarts Legacy.
Hogwarts Legacy will launch holiday 2022 for PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
