When it comes to stealth games, there are a few grandmaster series, and Hitman is one of them. Built around the idea of the perfect, stealthy kill, the series was revitalized a few years ago. Fans of the series have known for a while that Hitman 3 was in the works, but now they know a bit more.

The main draw of the Hitman series is, and always has been, the lure of the creative kill. Staples of the series include massive levels with tons of options for stealth and murder. From creative "accidents", to sabotage, to finding the perfect sniper spot, the best Hitman levels have a million and one ways to take a life. Exploring those ways is where the fun comes in, and what has made the new Hitman series a favorite as people are stuck at home.

Along with its mysterious new IP, developer IO has worked on Hitman 3 for a while now. Today, it was finally shown off for the first time, and it looks stunning. While not a huge visual leap from the previous two entries, the game looks lovely and, more importantly, full of the kind of levels players have come to expect from a good Hitman game. Even better, there is an official release window: Hitman 3 will be coming to the PlayStation 5 in January of 2021.

There are a few things that players know to expect from this game. For starters, it is supposed to wrap up the current incarnation of the series, making it a trilogy. This is not surprising, since Agent 47's life has been re-written several times already. Players are hoping for a few new innovations, since the previous two games have largely stuck to the series formula with little change, even between Hitman and Hitman 2. This has left some players feeling like the second game was just a glorified expansion to the first. Co-op is among the most requested features for Hitman 3, something that could open up a whole new world of possibilities.

The game's reveal showed a trailer that included men with dogs hunting Agent 47 through the woods. It is not yet known if this will be an actual segment of the game, nor how long it will be in general. What is known is that one of the levels will take place in Dubai, and judging from the footage shown, it's inside the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. Will it match some of the greatest Hitman levels through the ages? Hopefully.

Of course, praise for the current Hitman series has not been universal. It has been criticized for repetitiveness and gameplay that is largely divorced from the story. Lack of innovation has also been a major complaint. Hopefully Hitman 3 will emphasize what makes Hitman a great stealth series, and minimize the shortcomings inherent in it.

Hitman 3 will be available for the PlayStation 5 in January 2021.
