Hilary Duff first announced that she would be returning to her iconic Disney Channel character Lizzie McGuire back in 2019 at Disney's D23 Expo. However, fans were left completely disappointed and heartbroken when the news broke out that the series reboot had subsequently been canceled just a few months into production, and Duff has now spoken about what the series would have focused on.

The Lizzie McGuire reboot for Disney Plus was set to feature all the original cast members, including original creator of the series Terri Minsky. The animated, cartoon version of Lizzie that acted as a narration of her inner mind was also set to make a comeback in the revival. The main reason for the cancellation of the Lizzie McGuire revival reportedly had mostly to do with creative differences between Disney and Minsky. Minsky was fired from the project and the vision for the series fell apart shortly after that.

After two episodes of the Lizzie McGuire reboot were filmed, Disney decided to move in a different creative direction. The series was completely sent to the chopping board shortly after. However, Duff has recently stepped forward to reveal to fans what exactly the beloved Lizzie was going to be exploring and tackling in the Disney Plus reboot. Duff shared during an interview with Cosmopolitan, “My character was moving back home with her parents because she caught her soon-to-be fiancé cheating on her. She was falling flat on her face at the moment and being like, ‘I need to pivot because everything that I thought was wasn’t, and I’m turning 30. What the f***?”"

It became exposed that Disney's different creative direction for the series was ultimately to censor it, revealing that the company thought the original plot was too adult and mature in tone for it’s fanbase. Duff took to Instagram to directly address Disney and bring fans some sort of comfort in the midst of the sudden cancellation. She emphasized that she would be “doing a disservice to everyone by limiting the realities of a 30-year-old’s journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating. We can all take a moment to mourn the amazing woman she would have been and the adventures we would have taken with her.”

What’s perhaps even more disheartening is that the original cast had already reunited and shot two episodes for the Disney revival that will never make it on screen. Actress Hallie Todd, who played Lizzie’s mother, shared how devastated she was regarding the cancellation. She stated, “I’m sad. We had the best time when we got together for those two episodes. It felt like no time had passed, except that all of a sudden these kids were adults.”
