Hideo Kojima is one of the more enigmatic creators in the video game world, and a lot of questions remain unanswered for his forthcoming game Death StrandingMany fans of the developer were hoping to learn new information about the project tonight at The Game Awards, but it appears that Kojima won't be in attendance–or at least says he won't be.

In a post on Twitter, Kojima congratulated The Game Awards founder and host Geoff Keighley, wishing him luck on the show, and apologizing that he couldn't make it this year. Kojima skipping the presentation is pretty surprising, as he's a key figure in the industry and even took home the Industry Icon award at the 2016 show. Of course, a developer of his stature with a game as coveted as Death Stranding on the way is obviously very busy, so it would make sense that other things take priority over an awards show.

That said, though, this is Hideo Kojima, one of the most complex developers out there. There is always the possibility that he has some sort of reveal planned for the show and simply wants to avoid the risk of it being spoiled. Even if Kojima isn't in attendance, it certainly isn't hard to imagine some additional details about Death Stranding being announced tonight, as it still isn't very clear what the game is actually about.

Should Kojima really be a no-show, The Game Awards ought to have tons of new reveals, teases, and info about upcoming and unannounced games to keep gamers sated. Many major companies have been teasing new games for weeks leading up to the event, including Nintendo, who seems to have some sort of Metroid news slated for the event.

The show kicks off tonight at 5:30 pm and is definitely worth checking out for any gamers that want to see how their favorite titles of the year stack up against each other. 2018 was packed full of major Triple-A games and stellar indies, so there's likely to be quite a bit of emotion among the show's attendees, even if Kojima isn't present.

The Game Awards 2018 will be broadcast today, Thursday, December 6, at 9:00 PM EST, with a pre-show starting at 8:30 PM EST.
