Known for keeping his projects close to the chest, Hideo Kojima has only vaguely talked about what his next game - codenamed Project Ogre - would be about. He didn't open up regarding an actual plot, gameplay, or anything we would associate with true details of a game. Rather, Kojima talked about the kind of themes players would expect, namely that Project Ogre would be a "subdued experience."
One game that Kojima and his team at Kojima Productions is working is Metal Gear Solid: Rising, which will debuting for audiences at the 2011 Spike Video Game Awards. The new MGS title focuses on secondary protagonist Raiden, who made a bad-ass appearance in Metal Gear Solid 4. Since Project Ogre is so secretive at the moment and given the themes that were discussed in MGS4, the project could be a fifth Metal Gear Solid title. Kojima himself had mentioned before that Metal Gear Solid 5 would have to be made.
There are plenty of things to infer from Kojima's quote, given his pedigree of game development and the kind of themes he deals with through the medium of interactive entertainment. Here's what he had to say:
"I can’t really say too much about that project yet, but it’s a very subdued experience.
It’s a little bit different to what I’ve done up until now. On the surface it will look similar, but once you get into it, it will be a different experience — and I’m hoping people look forward to that.
The Ogre project is going to take a lot of time, so I want to produce some other things on the side, like I’m doing with Rising. So while I’m working on Ogre there might be a couple of other projects going on at the same time."
So, Project Ogre is going to be taking some time then? Not entirely surprising, but Kojima can't be berated for wanting to ensure that each game he wants to create can be made to the best of his ability. Obviously, Kojima is going for something that will be familiar to players, perhaps in gameplay, but is going to be flipping things upside down when it comes to delving deeper. Whatever the case may be, it sounds exciting.
While more Metal Gear Solid games aren't a bad thing, seeing brand new IPs or follow ups on older titles like Zone of the Enders (which is getting a HD collection) or even something Boktai related... maybe not Boktai, but more ZoE would be great.
