During his keynote address at this year's Develop Conference, Hideo Kojima states that he is confident that his new game, Death Stranding, will be his best yet.
The surprise E3 2016 reveal of Death Stranding was one of the event's highlights, even though no one has any idea what the title is all about or what role that mysterious baby will play in the game. While secrecy is part of Kojima's modus operandi for his new game, the legendary game developer recently gave a bit more of an insight into how the development of Death Stranding has differed from previous experiences, and his hopes for the title.
During his keynote address at this year's Develop Conference, Kojima stated that he is "very confident" that Death Stranding will be his "best work" yet. Speaking onstage with PlayStation 4 lead architect - and recent travel buddy - Mark Cerny, Kojima said that in his many years of developing video games, he's had to give up on gameplay features or make compromises in order for production to proceed.
But ever since he partnered up with Sony, it appears that compromise is no longer an issue for Kojima, and his team are apparently working towards something "completely new", hence why he's confident that Death Stranding will be his best game so far.
"So far, when I've been making games, I've had to give up on something or at least compromise on something in order to get things done. But this time, working with you [Mark Cerny] and you bringing the state of the art technologies, we will get around that [usual problem].
I'm very confident that we're working towards something completely new and that no-one has seen so far. This will be my best work so far, I'm very confident about that."
Given how many have proclaimed Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain to be Kojima's masterpiece, it will take something quite special for Death Stranding to usurp that game as the director's best work. But given the freedom and considerable resources afforded to him by Sony, Kojima's proclamation could very well come true upon Death Stranding's release.
While very little has been revealed about the game's story and gameplay, aside from cryptic explanations over the Death Stranding title, uncompromised creative freedom seems to be a great fit for Kojima. From what little we know about his new game, it appears that Death Stranding is a wildly ambitious work that incorporates a number of complex ideas, including some that go well beyond a video game. In fact, not long after that E3 reveal trailer, Kojima Productions posted up a series of mysterious tweets informing fans that "The Game" has already begun and that they're already playing it - whatever that means.
It's anyone's guess at this point as to what Death Standing will ultimately turn out to be, but early signs indicate that Kojima isn't holding anything back in making his mysterious new game. With the release date still quite a while away, there is plenty of time for new details about the game to come out. Stay tuned for more news and announcements regarding what may be Hideo Kojima's best work yet.
Death Stranding will be a PS4 exclusive, and its release date has not been announced.
