Hideo Kojima's most recent game, Death Stranding, was last year's most interesting, and most divisive, release. The game certainly wasn't for everyone, featuring a complicated world and gameplay that some felt was repetitive. However, some fans believe Kojima is now teasing a Death Stranding sequel, or at least, the developer's next full-fledged game, after a series of tweets.

The first tweet, and the one that sparked the most speculation, featured a snapshot of Kojima's desk, with a baby doll, sketches, and a few writing utensils scattered around. In the caption, Kojima described his process of conceptualizing new ideas, writing, "Here's my way of designing [a] new title w/Yoji [Shinkawa]. " Kojima went on to explain the pair establishes the groundwork for the world, characters, ideas, and keywords that will be used in the game.

What many have pointed to throughout the speculation is the sketch on Kojima's desk, which looks roughly like a Star Destroyer from Star WarsA second tweet shows another ship, with the word "Bridges" vaguely inscribed on it, fueling even more speculation that Kojima may be subtly teasing his next project.

While Kojima does enjoy teasing fans, and it's possible that the concept Kojima is kicking around will eventually be expanded into a full-fledged game, it doesn't seem like this is meant to be taken as a tease. Fans often ask Kojima how he comes up with his narratives, as they're frequently bizarre, so it seems more likely that Kojima is simply trying to offer up an explanation.

That being said, there's a good chance Kojima is already working on a new project, even if it is still in a pre-production or conceptualization phase. Death Stranding's ending — and story in general — is complicated to explain, and it may be difficult to get new players up to speed in a sequel, so it seems more likely that Kojima's next project would be something new entirely.

Of course, complicated narratives are nothing new for Kojima, so anything is possible. Kojima had a big project fall apart, but it's anyone's guess as to what that project was. Without a doubt, Kojima will release more games in the future. Regardless of whether or not the developer is teasing anything, it's interesting to get some insight into how he comes up with new projects.

Death Stranding is available now on PS4. A PC version is in development.
