Following a dark third season, the common belief is that Barry will conclude after season 4. However, Henry Winkler, who plays the charming actor/mentor Gene Cousineau, might have contradicted that notion recently.

Winkler provided an update on the HBO hit's upcoming season, revealing that the filming of Barry season 4 has been completed and is now in the editing stage. However, he later could not confirm nor deny that the show's fourth season will be its last one, which is sure to get fans to speculate whether the show will be done after its fourth season.

While at the Golden Globes, Winkler revealed where Barry season 4 was production-wise. "Speaking Tuesday on the red carpet at the Golden Globes, where he’s nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series, he revealed that the fourth season has finished shooting and is currently in editing," writes Deadline. Winkler later said to actress Laverne Cox, “I cannot talk to you about that because they will come and take my grandchildren. They are so strict, I cannot say a word other than it’s on HBO, and it’s called Barry."

If Winkler's non-confirmation confirms that there will be another season of Barry after the fourth, that would make for quite a twist since Anthony Carrigan, who plays the sweet and lovable gangster NoHo Hank, revealed that Barry season 4 would be the last not too long ago. Of course, it's also possible that HBO executives spoke with Carrigan and the show's cast afterward, telling them all not to delve into the show's future to prevent fans from having the show potentially somewhat spoiled. For now, all that's set in stone is that Barry will have a fourth season coming up in due time.

Given how far down everyone in Barry went in the third season and seeing that pretty much everyone has started to suffer the consequences of their actions, it's hard to see how it could get any worse from here in a possible fifth season. Barry and Fuches have both been arrested with little hope of escaping their legal predicament. Sally has all but destroyed her hopes and dreams of ever becoming a successful actor in Hollywood. NoHo Hank may have lost Cristobal, the man he loves, forever after being tortured through electroshock therapy. The fourth season will inevitably tackle the fallout from all that happened in season 3, but how could the show stoop lower in Barry season 4 in a way that would breed a follow-up?

One possible way they could do it is to veer into a new direction that fans did not see coming, as they did in season 3. While Barry always was one to touch up on dark humor, fans were not anticipating just how much of the darkness would be embraced in Barry season 3. Perhaps going in a new direction could extend the show's lifespan another year, but that would only work if they do it in a way that would not have fans rolling their eyes. Given that things kept spiralling out of control every season, it would be unbelievable for the show to suddenly go on a different route.

Barry seasons 1-3 can currently be streamed on HBO Max.
