The Witcher showrunners are hoping that the Netflix series could run at least another seven seasons. Its star, Henry Cavill, is on board with that plan, but his commitment doesn't appear to be unconditional.

The first season of The Witcher was a massive success for the streaming service and season 2 is on the way relatively shortly. Last year, The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich made it clear that she has enough ideas for the show to run another seven seasons.

While those plans seemed overly ambitious at the time, Cavill has said he's good with that plan, but he wants to make sure that those in charge make one big promise. Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, the actor who is also the most recent iteration of Superman said that he's willing to come back to The Witcher for its entire long run as long as the showrunners continue making high-quality programming. Cavill said they also need to make sure that the stories that are pumped out stay true to the vision of the author of The Witcher books, Andrzej Sapkowski.

So far, that caveat appears to be something the showrunners are good with. The first season was very close to the original books that spawned the popular game franchise. Though people in charge of the Netflix series say Cavill did have some different ideas for The Witcher season 2, the actor thought they would open the character up a bit more. At the same time, the changes the actor suggested wouldn't be big alterations to the story, it's just a matter of Geralt having a bit more dialog.

The first episode of season 2 will adapt "A Grain of Truth," the third entry in "The Last Wish." That particular story is geared to explore family dynamics and relationships between several characters in The Witcher universe. The plot has Geralt coming across an old manor owned by a cursed nobleman known as Nivellen. The season will also feature the Witcher taking Ciri back to her childhood home of Kaer Morhen.

While it's not known whether or not Netflix will allow for Schmidt Hissrich and Cavill's plans for seven or eight seasons of The Witcher, the series is definitely still going strong. It's already been renewed for a third season and the popularity of the show likely means that it will keep going as long as those attached to it are willing to keep working on it.

The Witcher season 2 debuts on Netflix on December 17, 2021.
