After fans were very to see Henry Cavill announce his intentions to reprise his role as Superman as he did in Man of Steel, they have to be somewhat wary because even though he plans to play the role again, it remains up in the air if DC will make any upcoming installments with his iteration as the OG superhero.
As it turns out, nothing is official regarding Cavill's return as Superman despite the publicity of him donning the red cape again. Furthermore, there are not any immediate plans for any Superman sequels at present for the DCEU.
According to The Wrap, Cavill's return has not been official yet, and no one's been tied to a project. "According to numerous insiders with knowledge of the situation, although it has been previously reported that the search for a writer was currently underway, the fact is there’s currently no writer or director attached to the project, and there’s currently no formal deal with Cavill to return." The insider also said that no project is currently in the works. "Additionally, according to an insider, as it currently stands at the moment, there’s no forward momentum on the project while newly installed DC Studio bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran have been busy fine-tuning their long-range plan for the DCU."
If this does not get resolved shortly, things would get very awkward, not just because of Cavill's very well-publicized return as Superman but also because of his well-publicized departure from The Witcher as a result of his return as the man of steel. Fans were praying for Cavill to return as Superman, so if it all turns out to be a bunch of hot air, not only would they be devastated by the news, but they also would feel like they were given false hope. Even though the Superman movies with Cavill received overall mixed reviews, it's clear that he left an impression on the DC fanbase.
Given how much publicity Cavill's return as Superman has gotten, it's hard not to see DCEU making the necessary efforts to rectify this situation. Their cinematic universe has been on the up and up over the last few years. While there were some bumps and bruises along the way, the DCEU has largely cleaned up the mess it left back in 2016 and 2017. Having Cavill back has intrigued fans to see what the potential of a Superman movie could be if his version of the character is given a better story and director compared to what he has been given in the past.
What fans are looking forward to more than anything is seeing a modern interpretation of Superman from Cavill. They gravitated to him when he played the role despite the flaws of the movies he played him in. Now that the DCEU has a clear direction, having the right man as the lead combined with the right material could potentially open the door to some of the best movies fans have seen with Superman.
