The Witcher franchise features an ever-expanding universe of magic, monsters, and all-too-human mayhem, and the Netflix adaptation seems poised to take full advantage of this. The show has so much existing material to draw on that it could go in many different directions, but actor Henry Cavill has expressed hopes that it will go to Toussaint. However, his wish is made complicated by the revelation that the man who plays The Witcher on TV has never actually played The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's critically acclaimed Blood and Wine DLC.
In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's Blood and Wine expansion, Geralt of Rivia journeys to the new in-game region of Toussaint and embarks on over 30 hours of newly-added quests. Players can also have Geralt relax in his very own vineyard, discover the terrible secret of the capital city, or simply hunt down a variety of all-new monsters.
Although Cavill has visited Toussaint alongside Geralt in The Witcher books, he admitted in an interview with IGN that he hasn't actually played the Blood and Wine DLC yet. This could have a significant impact on how he plays Geralt since the time the witcher spends in Toussaint is rather different across mediums. Cavill's take on Geralt has already separated from the way the series' protagonist was portrayed in both the books and the games, so this could be set up for an all-new take on Geralt in Toussaint.
The books have Geralt spend some time in Toussaint after being trapped there when the pastors get snowed in. According to Cavill, this could be a beautiful opportunity for The Witcher show to explore the region. Cavill already intends to evolve his interpretation of Geralt for season 2 of The Witcher, and bringing Geralt to a new place--willingly or unwillingly--would certainly be one way to push the character's development. It could also give the writers a way to bring in iconic characters like Emiel Regis Rohellec Terzieff-Godefroy, better known as Regis, and Sylvia Anna, another girl affected by the so-called Curse of the Black Sun.
Apparently, Cavill has plans to sit down and play through the Blood and Wine expansion with his nephews this Christmas. This journey to the video game version of Toussaint may come just in time for the actor to understand another aspect of The Witcher's world. Regardless, he may finally see why the DLC is so highly regarded.
The Witcher season 2 will premiere December 17 on Netflix.
