Ninja Theory is hard at work with its next two projects, Senua’s Saga: Helllade 2 and Project Mara. With Project Mara seemingly far off, the developer popped into the Xbox Games Showcase to give fans a little more information on the highly anticipated sequel and confirm the game’s setting.

The first time fans got a look at Senau’s Saga: Hellblade 2 was back at The 2019 Game Awards. The trailer, which was surprising to some, was shown right next to the reveal trailer for the Xbox Series X, seemingly to signify major importance for the next-generation console. While the trailer was exciting, it didn’t offer fans much information and the game has been radio silent since.

During the Xbox Games Showcase, Studio Head at Ninja Theory Dom Matthews gave fans a quick update on Hellblade 2, confirming that the game will take place in the beautiful country of Iceland. While Matthews didn’t offer any other information regarding the game, he did point fans in the direction of Ninja Theory’s YouTube channel for a Developer Diary video that is all about the team scouting out Iceland.

In the Developer Diary video, Ninja Theory Founder Tameem Antoniades explains that after taking a break once Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was completed, he traveled to Iceland. While traveling across the vast landscapes Antoniades says this trip is what inspired him to make a sequel to the psychological thriller. Antoniades returned to Iceland later with a film crew and narrowed different locations down to lay out Senua’s journey for Hellbalde 2.

Using different film crews, Ninja Theory has recreated a 9th-century  version of Iceland that is “as real and immersive as possible.” Antoniades added that “everything [sound, lighting, and landscape] in Hellblade 2 should be based on something real.”

There are no story details for Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 currently, and it will be interesting to see how it builds on the events of the first game. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was a physiological thriller following Senua in her journey to reunite with her lost lover and battles the demons in her mind. A player’s interpretation of the events in the first game may make for some interesting theories for Hellbalde 2.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 is just one of the games Ninja Theory has in development. After a mysterious teaser earlier this year, there have been no updates on the experimental horror game Project Mara. Project Mara is the second game, after Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice to focus on recreating the terror of mental health issues based on real experiences.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 is in development for PC and Xbox Series X.
