Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2's titular star Senua has been brought to life in two new images released this morning. While Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 is still in development and fans are eager for a release date, news like this is certainly what's needed to keep everyone interested.

The stunning images come courtesy of a tweet from series developer Ninja Theory. In it, the studio credits its development of skin and eye materials using studio references. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice was heralded for its stunning visuals, and it looks like they're only getting better.

The tweet consists of two side-by-side images. The first is a "clean" version of Senua at a 3/4 view looking to stage right. Her face is scarred in several places, showing the many trials and battles she has overcome during and since the first Hellblade's story. The second shot shows her face covered in a black substance like ash or face paint that has been streaked by sweat, rain, or something similarly wet. Both images are stunning in how lifelike they are.

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice was released in 2017 for PC and PlayStation 4 before being ported to Xbox One in 2018, Switch in 2019, and finally Xbox Series X/S in 2021. Described as an "independent AAA" game, it was extremely well received by critics and players alike due to its visuals, sound design, gripping story, and protagonist. As such, it was nominated for and won several well-deserved awards. The story follows Senua, a young Pict woman on a quest to save the soul of her dead lover from the Norse goddess Hela. Notably, Senua suffers from psychosis, and Ninja Theory took a unique and true to life approach to representing the illness.

Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 was announced at The Game Awards in 2019. It is set in Iceland and will make use of the new Unreal Engine 5. Two trailers have been released, the initial reveal trailer and a longer gameplay trailer. Since the release of the first Hellblade, Microsoft had acquired Ninja Theory. Since this acquisition and the announcement of the sequel, it has been revealed that the sequel will be coming to Xbox and PC only. Not much is known about Hellblade 2 at this point, including a potential release date. Whenever it comes, it is likely to be another gripping story about a tragic, yet courageous, woman.

Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 is in development for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
