The defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard has shone the spotlight on not only the controversial couple, but also on their famous friends and colleagues. A number of other celebrities have entered the fold indirectly with their personal opinions on the dispute, including Harry Potter star Helena Bonham Carter.

High-profile names such as Paul Bettany, James Franco, and Elon Musk have been included in the courtroom conversations, with everything from disturbing text messages to allegations of secret affairs being aired out for the public to see. However, Bonham Carter's previous comments about Depp have recently resurfaced on social media amidst the ongoing legal proceedings.

Fans took to Twitter to show their support for Depp using Carter's statements from a tell-all interview she had with The Guardian back in 2020. When asked for her thoughts about the allegations against Depp, in which The Sun had called him a drug addict and a "wife-beater," the Harry Potter star said she was totally surprised at how they were describing him, saying that none of it made any sense. She explained that she personally knows Depp to be "old-fashioned" with such manners (implying that he has always been a gentleman) and that he is not stupid. According to her, Depp wouldn't have gone to this length if he thought he was in the wrong.

In the same interview, Carter admitted that she never sees anything in black and white. She believes that people are "multicolored" and that they're almost never all good or all bad. She also made it clear that one's fame or accolades do not excuse his or her crimes, and that it's important to observe the whole picture to truly understand a person. While Carter has not made any new statements about the defamation trial as of late, it can be assumed that she still stands by her comments about Depp and that she wishes only the best for him.

It's no secret that Carter and Depp share an extremely close connection. The two have worked together on several blockbuster films before such as Alice and Wonderland and Sweeney Todd, and Depp is the godfather to Carter's children with visionary director Tim Burton, who is also a favored colleague of his. With that in mind, one could easily dismiss Carter's defence of Depp as favoritism, but many fans trust that Carter's words come from a genuine place, given that she is someone who most people consider to be a good judge of character.

The Harry Potter collection is now streaming on HBO Max.
