One of the first standout exclusives for the PS3 was Ninja Theory's Heavenly Sword, an action title in the same vein as another popular PlayStation series, God of War. After receiving a fairly positive reception and selling over 1.5 million copies, the development team admitted to having an entire trilogy in mind, with Heavenly Sword 2 already written.  Alas, the yet-to-be-prolific studio eventually left the franchise behind to focus on new projects, including last year's Enslaved: Odyssey to the West.

Five years on, rumors have occasionally sprung up regarding a sequel to heroine Nariko's debut, but all of them have quickly fallen to the wayside as Ninja Theory has continuously stated that no further progress has been made on a follow up. Despite Ninja Theory's seemingly permanent detachment from the future of the series, it appears that we might be seeing Nariko once again at E3 this year, possibly with a new developer.

A recent article in the UK's PlayGamer magazine has unveiled details for the unannounced and unspoken of Heavenly Sword 2, indicating that a sequel might in fact be in development. According to PlayGamer, the sequel will be an open world game set 10 years after Heavenly Sword, filled with "[replayable missions] and an interactive environment." Nariko will also have to work her way up to obtaining the Heavenly Sword by mastering martial arts skills, rather than receiving the weapon at the outset.

This  news has yet to be confirmed by anyone, so it's hard to say how much truth the article holds. The Heavenly Sword franchise is not one that many gamers have expressed their everlasting loyalty to; what would make a developer pick up the franchise now? Ninja Theory is currently working on the reboot to the Devil May Cry series entitled DmC (no relation to DJ Run), and by all indications has no plans on returning to Heavenly Sword any time soon.

Would you be excited to see Heavenly Sword 2 at this year's E3, or have you given up on the nearly forgotten PS3 exclusive? Let us know in the comments below.
