HBO's new streaming service, HBO Max, is not available on Roku devices or Amazon Fire TV Sticks, it has been revealed. HBO Max officially launched today with an early discount for subscribers and there are also HBO Max apps on PS4 and Xbox One.

A report by CNET reveals that HBO Max isn't available on Roku devices or Amazon Fire TV Sticks because HBO parent company AT&T hasn't created a deal with the two companies. While Roku's statement was more positive about the movie and TV service and said that "we look forward to helping HBO Max in the future successfully scale their streaming business," Amazon said that AT&T is "choosing to deny these loyal HBO customers access to the expanded catalog."

It does seem strange that AT&T has been unable to reach a deal with Roku and Amazon. Amazon also said that nearly five million HBO subscribers access the network through Amazon Prime Video Channels, allowing them to watch HBO shows like Game of Thrones on their Fire TV Sticks. There are also more than 40 million homes in the United States that use Roku. That's a huge number of potential viewers not able to get HBO Max and millions of HBO subscribers who will be upset by this decision.

HBO Max has a lot working against it. Some HBO subscribers have said that they have found it unclear how to access HBO Max content from the app and there is some confusion over the difference between HBO Max and HBO GO, another HBO streaming service. The success of streaming services like Disney+ also means that there is huge competition and not putting HBO Max on Roku devices and Amazon Fire TV Sticks won't help.
