A new TV adaptation of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser in the works at HBO. The television series reportedly already has David Gordon Green, who directed 2018’s Halloween, in place to helm the first few episodes of the show.

Green will help kick off the show, setting the tone and pace for the first few episodes which will be scripted by Mark Verheiden and Michael Dougherty. Both writers bring a wealth of experience to the project, with Verheiden having previously worked on Battlestar Galactica and Daredevil, and Dougherty having written Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Trick r’ Treat.

The show will allegedly aim to create an elevated continuation and expansion on the Hellraiser mythos and will not be a remake of the original films. Instead, it will expound and extrapolate on what has come before it, treating Pinhead’s previous stories as canon to build upon. Originally human, Pinhead was transformed into a creature that now resides in an extradimensional realm. Alongside his fellow Cenobites, they are able to cross over to Earth through a puzzle box to harvest human souls.

The Hellraiser franchise includes 10 feature films alongside several books, comics, and an unreleased video game. It all stemmed from Barker’s novella, The Hellbound Heart. The first movie in the series, simply titled Hellraiser, was released back in 1987. It was written and directed by Barker himself and introduced Pinhead and the Cenobites to a whole generation of horror fans across the globe. Despite HBO's small screen plans for the franchise, there is also a separate, unrelated Hellraiser movie in development.

Hellraiser is currently in development at HBO.
