Niantic and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment released Harry Potter: Wizards Unite back in 2019 and it has been updated with new content and fixes since. The mobile title maintained a decent community, but the developers have confirmed that it will be shutting down.

Due to the success of Niantic's Pokemon GO, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment pursued the mobile game developer to work on something in the Harry Potter universe. As a result, Niantic has worked with Portkey Games in order to craft a comparable mobile game for Harry Potter fans to experience. Just like Pokemon GO, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite utilizes augmented reality as a core feature and players would explore the real world to discover new secrets in the mobile game.

he Harry Potter: Wizards Unite development team has confirmed that the title has been downloaded by millions of Harry Potter fans around the world. Because the game is being phased out rather than shut down without notice, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite fans will be able to play the mobile title for a few more months. Niantic and Portkey Games recently updated Harry Potter: Wizards Unite to reward players more frequently and experience gains have been increased.

Despite the upcoming shutdown of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, the remaining Lethal Adversaries will still be added to the mobile game. There will still be a number of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite events during November and December of this year, including the Half-Blood Prince Brilliant Event Part 1 this month and Voldemort Lethal Adversaries Event next month. These events will give Harry Potter: Wizards Unite fans more reasons to return between now and the shutdown of the game.

Pokemon and Harry Potter aren't the only universes being explored through augmented reality implementation as Minecraft recently launched Minecraft Earth. These games all encourage players to walk around and gravitate to real-world locations in order to complete various activities, interact with other players, and more. It's currently unclear if the shutdown of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is linked with the release of any other projects, but WB Games is set to release Hogwarts Legacy in 2022, the same year that the mobile game goes offline.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is available right now for Android and iOS.
