There are many Harry Potter fans who think that Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) should have gotten married and lived happily ever after. Instead, Hermione ends up with Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) and Harry commits to Ginny Weasley (Bonnie Wright). After the emotional journey of the book series and film franchise, it's hard not to have strong feelings about these relationships, including why Hermione and Ron choose each other.

Why do these characters get married instead of Hermione and Harry? And what has J.K. Rowling said many years after making this decision? There's a lot to know about the marriages that happen at the end of the Harry Potter series.

Why Did Hermione Not End Up With Harry?

While the Harry Potter movies change things about Hermione, her relationship with Ron remains the same. Fans have a few theories about why Hermione ends up with Ron and not Harry, and they make sense. Some think that Harry marries Ginny and Hermione marries Ron so they both become part of the Weasley family and their children become cousins, which allows them to remain a big part of each other's lives. This does seem like it could be why J.K. Rowling made this narrative decision. Hermione, Harry, and Ron have experienced so much together that it would be hard for them to not stay in close touch.

Others think that Hermione and Harry are good friends and therefore better off in a platonic, not romantic, relationship, particularly because Hermione seems to bother Harry in many parts of the book series.

And then there's also the theory that Hermione and Harry treat each other like siblings and would never be physically attracted to each other. Ron is one of the most influential Harry Potter characters, and since he and Hermione know each other for so long and from a young age, it does make sense that sparks would develop.

Hermione and Ron in Harry Potter

Hermione is a hero at Hogwarts and some think that it would have been fine if she hadn't ended up with either Ron or Harry, which is also another fair point. She's definitely a strong-willed character and stands on her own two feet all the time.

The best explanation for Hermione and Ron ending up together? They have opposite personalities. Hermione is tough and independent and Ron is sweet and caring, and they have personality traits and unique qualities that make their relationship work.

What Did J.K. Rowling Say About Hermione And Ron?

According to CNN, J.K Rowling spoke about Hermione and Ron's relationship in an interview with Emma Watson for Wonderland magazine in 2014. The author said that she thinks that Hermione and Harry should have gotten married.

Rowling said, “I wrote the Hermione/Ron relationship as a form of wish fulfillment. That’s how it was conceived, really. For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron. I know, I’m sorry. I can hear the rage and fury it might cause some fans, but if I’m absolutely honest, distance has given me perspective on that."

Rowling continued, "It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility. Am I breaking people’s hearts by saying this? I hope not.”

While Rowling has said that she thinks that she should have written a different ending for Harry and Hermione, the author did explain that she thinks that Ron and Hermione are a good match. While Emma Watson has played other characters, her time as Hermione will always be iconic, as she plays the smart and mature character perfectly. And while Rupert Grint has spoken about playing Ron, he's also well-cast, as he shows that Ron is nervous but eager to be loyal to his friends and family. Even fans who don't agree with Hermione and Ron's relationship can agree that they both have some great character traits.

According to Mental Floss, Rowling said that Hermione and Ron are equally matched and good for each other because of their personalities. She said, “[They] are drawn to each other because they balance each other out. Hermione's got the sensitivity and maturity that's been left out of Ron, and Ron loosens up Hermione a bit, gets her to have some fun." Rowling added of the dynamic between the characters, "They love each other and they bicker a bit, but they enjoy bickering, so we shouldn't worry about it."

In 2016, Rupert Grint told The Huffington Post that he didn't think that the characters made it. The actor said, "I would expect Ron has probably divorced Hermione already. I don't think that relationship would have done very well."
