About a month ago, Pokemon GO developer Niantic confirmed that it is currently working on a new mobile AR game set in author J.K. Rowling's Potterverse called Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, which will launch next year. Not to be outdone by the announcement, Warner Bros. Interactive recently revealed a new label expressly designed to make new games for the fantasy series, with the publisher now proclaiming that it has plans to release a fresh RPG based on the property named Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery that's set to release in 2018 for Android and iOS.

According to Warner Bros., Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is a narrative-driven role-playing game set in the famous fictional academy, and it will allow players to "create their own character and experience life as a Hogwarts student" by "progressing through their years" at the school. Throughout the game, would-be wizards and witches can take magical classes such as Defense Against the Dark Arts, Potions, and Duelling Club.

Beyond the official announcement of Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery's existence, neither Warner Bros. nor the game's developer Jam City have provided too many details regarding the title's content. That said, though, an entry on Pottermore asserts fan-favorite characters will be in the game, with a segment of the post reading, "There’ll be faces you recognise, too, with many subjects taught by Professors you may already know and love (or know and dislike, depending on who they are…)." And according to VentureBeat, the game is "taking place in the mid-1980s after the Wizarding Wars," and it will include the likes of Albus Dumbledore, Hagrid, and more.

Taking all of this into consideration, there have already been a plethora of Harry Potter games released thus far, but the majority of them have either been dull movie tie-in cash grabs or poorly developed projects related to the franchise. With this being the case, it's easy to get excited about the potential for Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, as well as the forthcoming console game from Warner Bros. that's connected to the fantasy series, but it's best to reserve judgment until more concrete information about the titles are given.

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is scheduled to release sometime in 2018 for Android and iOS.
