As each year passes in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, fans get closer to learning the truth behind its many ongoing mysteries, like the fate of the player character's brother Jacob and the identity of "R." At the time of this writing, it's unclear who exactly "R" is in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, but there are some theories that have been making the rounds.

For those who haven't played the commercially successful mobile game, "R" is a mysterious character who has something to do with the Cursed Vaults hidden at Hogwarts. R hasn't had much direct impact in the story yet, though whoever R is did write a coded note to Ben Copper while that character was trapped in Cursed Ice, in turn leading some to be suspicious that Ben knows more than he is leading on.

Some people believe Ben Copper himself is R, whereas others think R is the player character's brother Jacob. Of course, it's worth pointing out that neither of those characters have names that start with "R," and assuming R is an initial, then whoever it is must have a name that starts with the letter.

Throughout the Harry Potter books, films, and Hogwarts Mystery itself, there are a number of characters who fit the bill. For example, it's possible that R is referring to Rubeus Hagrid, the gamekeeper of Hogwarts. Another possibility is that R is none other than Rita Skeeter, the ethically questionable journalist who appears as part of a side quest in Year 3.

R could also be Rowan, the first friend players make when they start their Hogwarts adventure. After all, Rowan is a brand new character created for Hogwarts Mystery, and they are a consistent part of the experience for anyone playing. It's also a common trope in the Harry Potter stories for twists where it's revealed characters are actually evil (or good when they've been portrayed as evil), so it wouldn't be totally out of left field if Rowan is in fact R.

At this time, it's hard to say with certainty who "R" is, but there are quite a few possibilities. Ultimately, fans will just have to wait for Jam City to add Year 4 and more story content to learn R's true identity.
