At the time of this writing, the recently released Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery only lets players play through the first couple years at Hogwarts, and then a small portion of Year 3. The main characters stay relatively young, only hitting 13 max by the time players reach the "end" of the game, and as a result, don't really express any romantic interests yet. However, romance options will be coming to Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery in future updates, according to developer Jam City.

In an interview with Newsweek, Jam City explained that relationships will "evolve" over time in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, and that both friends and enemies can become romantic interests. Unfortunately, the developer stopped short of confirming which characters will be available as romantic interests, but since there aren't many enemies in the game at this point, it's safe to say we know of at least one possibility.

Merula is an antagonistic Slytherin that players duel on multiple occasions throughout the course of Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery. She stands as one of the only full-blown "enemies" players have in the game, and so it seems reasonable to assume that she will be a romance option. Of course, other enemies can be introduced in future years that could become romance options instead, so players should keep that in mind.

Besides Merula, it's possible that the friends players meet during their Hogwarts adventure could also become romance options. Players are able to interact with a few different friends in their first couple of years at Hogwarts, including the Hufflepuff Penny Haywood and the Gryffindor Ben Copper.

There are actually some moments in the game where players have to make choices about which friend to take with them on certain quests, and it's possible these interactions will influence which characters will become romance options later on. For example, in Year 1, players have to choose between Ben Copper and Penny Haywood in one particular quest, and that choice may determine if players have a chance to romance Ben or Penny in future years.

Of course, that's just speculation at this time. Beyond Jam City's confirmation that romance options are indeed coming to Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, we don't know how it will work or how much player choice will influence it, so fans will just have to wait and see.
