Shortly after Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery launched, developer Jam City promised that it would be adding pets to the game. A couple of months later, and the studio kept its word, adding pets in an update that went live for players yesterday. Players have exactly four pets to choose from: a cat, an owl, a rat, and a toad, but as some fans have figured out, getting all four of these animals doesn't come cheap.

Each animal in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery has a specific price attached to it. For example, rats and toads both cost 160 gems apiece, but cats cost 215 gems, and owls cost the most at 320 gems. Gems, for those who may be unfamiliar with Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, are the primary in-game currency, which can be earned in-game or purchased with real money.

In order to buy all four animals in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, players will need to have a minimum of 855 gems. Since players can't buy a specific number of gems, but rather, must buy them in bulk, they will have to spend a minimum of $31 to have enough gems to get all four animals in the game.

Of course, it's possible to obtain gems without buying them with real money, though it will take quite a long time to build up enough gems to purchase one animal, let alone all four of them. Players are mainly able to earn gems by going to classes, but there are some other ways to earn gems in the game as well.

For example, players will sometimes get free gems as a reward for leveling up friends in friend encounters. The most free gems will come at the end of the school year, assuming players manage to win the House Cup, that is. Players can also earn free gems a few times a day by watching ads, with ads giving out about three gems per view.

However, if players choose to spend gems on pets, that means that they won't be able to use them to buy energy. Energy is the most precious resource in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery because it governs almost every action the player can do. Without a steady energy supply, players will have to wait hours in order to advance the plot. Ultimately, Hogwarts Mystery fans will just have to pick between going through the story faster or owning a pet.

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is out now for iOS and Android mobile devices.
