Over the last few months, developer Jam City has released a number of updates for Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery that have given players more ways to earn gems in-game. Gems, for the uninitiated, are the primary currency in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, and so it's important that players know how to get gems in the game.

As previously stated, Jam City has added more ways to get free gems than there were at launch. Previously, the only way players could earn free gems was through level up rewards, completing classes, winning the house cup, and leveling friends through story-specific friend encounters. All of these methods still work, but now there are additional ways to get gems in the game.

For example, players can now engage with friends outside of story-specific events. This way, players are able to level their friends and earn rewards, with early level rewards gifting players with five gems for each level up. This method will only work with a particular friend until they're leveled a few times, after which they will start giving players free energy instead.

Another way to earn free gems in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is by participating in special in-game events. So far, there have been a few in-game events, which have all challenged players to participate in classes and earn full stars in exchange for house crests that can then be turned in for rewards. The latest in-game event, which is still ongoing, is called Pyjama Party, and it allows players to win 10 gems at 20 house crests earned, and 15 gems at 55 house crests earned, in addition to some cosmetic rewards.

Finally, players can earn gems in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery by watching ads. Ads appeared in the game just recently, and one 30 second ad will get players three gems in return. Players can only watch ads in the game so many times per day, but they're still a solid method of building up one's gem supply without having to break out the wallet.

By knowing all the ways they can earn free gems, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery players should be able to do things like purchase energy and adopt pets without having to spend real world money. It will still take some grinding, but for many, it's a better alternative than paying for the game's rather expensive microtransactions.

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is out now for iOS and Android mobile devices.
