After a rocky development period, Hogwarts Legacy is finally out, and gamers have had a chance to explore the hallways of Hogwarts castle. As promised, the game is an immersive Harry Potter experience that allows gamers to live out the fantasy of attending a magical school. Players can pick which of the four Hogwarts houses they are sorted into, and this affects their playthrough of Hogwarts Legacy. Surprisingly, Slytherin has risen to the top to become the most popular house.

Despite being associated with Dark Magic, Slytherin house has managed to strike a chord with fans. This may be because the mysteriousness surrounding the house has given it more allure than intended. It could also be an indication that fans are deeply interested in Dark Magic, and do not ascribe to the black-and-white view of morality that often characterizes the franchise.

Slytherin’s Mysterious Allure

Slytherin house was founded by Salazar Slytherin and features a serpent on its crest. The house has gained a bad reputation over the years as being the home of Dark Wizards. The novels don’t give much evidence to the contrary, as antagonists like Voldemort, Draco Malfoy, and Bellatrix Lestrange are all from the house. It would seem that fans have every incentive to loathe the house, but data shows that most players are going for Slytherin house when playing Hogwarts Legacy. The house’s mysterious allure may partially explain this trend, as fans see very little of the Slytherin common room in the novel series, as Harry and his friends have little reason to be there. Nevertheless, with the dark reputation it holds, it is impossible to not wonder what goes on in the dark dungeons.

Not Everyone Believes That Slytherins Are the Bad Guys

Throughout the Harry Potter series, the Slytherins play an antagonistic role. There are a few good witches and wizards who emerge from the house, but there certainly aren’t enough to shake perceptions of the house within the wizarding world. In comparison, the Gryffindors are portrayed as brave and heroic, which creates an obvious camp of good guys and bad guys. While this may allow for smoother storytelling, life is seldom this simple. The popularity of Slytherin house may be because many fans simply don’t buy into the idea that the Slytherins are nothing but a rotten bunch. Instead, they may be misunderstood students with values that are often skewed to seem worse than they really are. Where others see narcissism and cunning, Slytherin fans see ambition and ingenuity.

Slytherin Wins When It Comes to Style

For fans of the academic aesthetic, Hogwarts Legacy is great as it features plenty of robes for players to try out. However, no house pulls it off better than Slytherin. With their sinister green ties and black robes, they nail the dark academic aesthetic, making them appear as though they know the most forbidden magic. It is hard to not be drawn in when Slytherin house allows its members to bend the rules, seize power, and know more than they were ever supposed to.

At some points, it looked like Hogwarts Legacy would never see the light of day. However, after a very successful launch, Hogwarts Legacy looks like it is on track to break sales records and perhaps even usher in a new line of Harry Potter games. Future Hogwarts Legacy games could build on the amazing foundation laid by including highly requested features such as Quidditch. Of course, Slytherin would be around once again, as the house's presence is integral to Hogwarts.

Hogwarts Legacy is available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. PS4 and Xbox One ports are scheduled to release on April 4, and the Nintendo Switch version arrives July 25, 2023.
