Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows-Part 1 marked the beginning of the end of Potter's battle against Lord Voldemort, the evil wizard responsible for the murder of Harry's parents, James and Lily Potter, along with the deaths of several wizards and innocent bystanders. At the beginning of the seventh film, Harry and several of his closest friends and mentors assist him in a brief but pivotal fight against Voldemort and the Death Eaters called the battle of the seven Potters.

This battle is fast-paced and an adrenaline rush as Harry's comrades from the Order of the Phoenix do everything they can to protect him and get him out of the Dursley family's house to a safe location. Here are the essential details surrounding the battle of the seven Potters.

Who Were The Seven Potters?

In order to get Harry out safely from the home of the Dursleys at Little Whinging, Alastor 'Mad-Eye' Moody appoints six members of the Order of the Phoenix to temporarily become Harry Potter by taking the polyjuice potion. The seven Potters are Harry himself, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Fred Weasley, George Weasley, Fleur Delacour, and Mundungus Fletcher. While Harry is heavily against the idea of having six of his closest companions risk their lives as decoys to protect him, they all volunteered to protect Harry from Voldemort and the Death Eaters.

The moment may be considered dramatic and tense, but it's also funny when each volunteer physically transforms into Harry and make fun of the wizard's appearance, wardrobe, eyesight, etc. Alastor explains to Harry that his late mother's protective spell at the Dursleys' house is about to end, and that the only way to get Harry to a safe house away from Little Whinging is to have decoys of Potter to fool the dark lord and his evil army.

Who Were Their Protectors?

Each of the seven Potters has a protector to ensure their safety and security on their escape from Little Whinging. Hermione is riding with Minister Kingsley Shacklebolt on a Thestral (a winged horse), Ron is with Nymphadora Tonks on a broomstick, George rides with Remus Lupin by broomstick, Fred rides along with his other brother Arthur on a broomstick, Fleur goes with her husband Bill (the oldest Weasley) on a Thestral, Mundungus rides with Alastor on a broomstick, and Harry rides with Rubeus Hagrid on the flying motorcycle (which belonged to Sirius Black, Harry's late godfather).

Of course, Ron and Hermione are up to the task because they are Harry's closest friends and have been by his side through every part of his complex journey. The involvement of Ron's brothers also shows how close and committed the Weasleys are as a family and in their evolving friendship with Harry. Fleur Delacour's sister was saved by Harry during one of the dangerous tasks of the Triwizard Tournament in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, so Fleur returns the favor and is supportive by helping Harry and his friends.

Lupin and Alastor have also been vital mentors to Harry and his growth as a wizard, and care about his well-being as a student and worthy companion. Hagrid is also the perfect protector for Harry because he was the one who brought Harry to the Dursleys' house when he was a baby and introduced him to the world of Hogwarts when he came of age, so it's only fitting that Hagrid rides the young wizard away from his childhood home.

What Happened in the Battle of the Seven Potters?

During the battle of the seven Potters, Harry and his decoys (along with each of their protectors) fly away from the Dursleys' house and Little Whinging. Once they are all in the air, the Death Eaters immediately start attacking the group. As everyone is being chased and attacked, Harry is desperate to help his friends, but Hagrid adamantly tells him that his orders are to get him to safety, and then presses the accelerator on the flying motorcycle to speed away. Hagrid continues to ride the bike, while Harry uses simple stunning spells to take down a few Death Eaters behind them.

Hagrid gets knocked unconscious by one of the Death Eaters, and Harry's owl, Hedwig, gives up Harry's position while trying to protect him. Sadly, Hedwig dies after getting fatally hit by a Death Eater. As Harry controls the bike with Hagrid still knocked out, Voldemort encounters Harry, who starts to feel pain from the lightning bolt scar on his head. The dark lord uses the wand of Lucius Malfoy (since his own is powerless against Harry's wand) and attempts to kill Harry while he's still in pain, but Harry's wand lifts and counterattacks Voldemort's wand, destroying it and leaving the dark lord in agony.

Hagrid wakes up as he and Harry safely land at the Burrow (the home of the Weasleys) with Ginny and her mom Molly anticipating their arrival. Almost everyone else arrives shortly afterward, with Lupin landing with George (who ends up with a heavily injured ear due to Snape's own Sectumsempra curse, which wasn't explicitly shown on-screen). Bill and Fleur arrive safely, but with the sad news that Alastor was killed (which is unfortunately not shown on-screen, and Fletcher's whereabouts are unknown). The others arrive unharmed, but each of them had encounters with Death Eaters (also sadly not shown on-screen).

While unknown at the time, Snape (who was seemingly working with Voldemort and told him that the Order of the Phoenix was moving Harry out of Little Whinging) was actually planning to use his curse on a Death Eater chasing after Lupin and George, but instead hit George's ear. Bellatrix Lestrange (one of Voldemort's closest allies) went after her niece Tonks and Ron, but Tonks managed to attack Bellatrix's husband, Rodolphus, while Ron wounded a Death Eater. Voldemort fatally ends Alastor's life with a killing curse when following Fletcher (who the Dark Lord initially thought was the real Harry Potter). Voldemort then follows Hermione and Kingsley (who both injure two Death Eaters out of the five chasing after them).

The Significance of The Battle of the Seven Potters

The battle of the seven Potters may have been a quick and fast-paced fight, but after the emotional loss of Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry and his allies understand that they have a war ahead of them. This battle also shows how deadly and lethal Voldemort and the Death Eaters are, while poking fun at Harry's friends and how they physically become Potter with the polyjuice potion.

This battle was risky and dangerous (especially with Hedwig and Alastor's shocking deaths, and George's ear injury), but this mostly successful escape from Little Whinging brought Harry and his companions together again, which was a hopeful sign after the emotions they endured when mourning the loss of Dumbledore. They also managed to celebrate Harry's seventeenth birthday and Bill and Fleur's wedding at the Burrow. The battle of the seven Potters was a prelude to the battle of Hogwarts, where Harry and Voldemort's armies have a larger fight to the death to determine the fate of the wizarding world.
