For the trophy and achievement hunters among us, it’s not just a hobby: it’s a way of life. When you’re committed enough to buy and play through terrible titles just because they offer an easy platinum trophy or 100% score, you know you’re dedicated to cause.

In an RPG, there’s scope for all kinds of creative trophies/achievements. Defeating optional superbosses, completing the most obscure sidequests… with the size of the world in these games and the sheer amount of things to do, just about anything can be trophy-worthy. Are you ready to take a look at some of the most fiendishly difficult and grinding-heavy trophies the beloved Final Fantasy franchise has to offer?

10 Bloodlust (Final Fantasy IX)

Via: We Got This Covered

When the PlayStation trinity of Final Fantasy VII, VIII and IX were revamped and rereleased for current-gen systems and PC (VIII only joining the party very recently), Square-Enix saw an opportunity to add trophy support into the mix.

We’ll be taking a look at quite a few from those three games, kicking off with Bloodlust. This Final Fantasy IX trophy/achievement requires the player to defeat a grand total of 10,000 enemies. It doesn’t matter which enemies: everything from a teeny little Flan upwards is fair game here. This one isn’t difficult, per se, but whichever approach you take, you’re going to be there for a while with this one.

9 Ruby Render/Emerald Eviscerator (Final Fantasy VII)

Optional superbosses are going to feature quite heavily in this rundown. First up, we’ve got the most iconic 90s duo since Kelly and Zack of Saved by the Bell: Ruby and Emerald Weapon.

As far as the trophies for defeating them go, this is a pick-your-poison situation. Many players would opt for Emerald Weapon as the more difficult of the two, owing to its higher health and Aire Tam Storm attack ('Materia Storm' backwards, it deals more damage to your party the more Materia you have equipped) which can instantly end your game without Final Attack Phoenix summon shenanigans. Ruby, meanwhile, is a completely different kind of problem, owing to its status-inflicting tentacles and other tricky techniques. They’re the hardest two battles in Final Fantasy VII, there’s no doubt about that.

8 Omega Destroyed (Final Fantasy VIII)

As we’ve mentioned, Final Fantasy VIII Remastered is now available on Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. This means two things: finally, Squall actually has discernible facial features and there’s no irony about his “best-looking guy here” jumbled pixel-face. Secondly, the game now has a trophy/achievement list for players to tackle.

Omega Destroyed would be our pick for the most challenging of the bunch. Some party-wrangling in Ultimecia’s Castle is required to reach this optional boss, which is among the most formidable in the series to date. Its actions are predictable, but you have to be efficiently set up to simply survive them, let alone deal enough damage to best this creature. It can instantly wipe out a party member, or deal 9,998 damage to everybody.

7 Perfect Sphere Master (Final Fantasy X)

Let’s take a break from tackling some of the franchise’s most formidable, challenging and monstrous superbosses for a moment. Next up, we’ve got a very different (but no less excruciating and frustrated-tears-inducing) kind of difficult ordeal.

Final Fantasy X’s Perfect Sphere Master trophy/achievement requires the player to complete the Sphere Grids of all main characters. If you’re familiar with the game, you’ll know that this demands a whole lot of grinding in the Monster Arena for stat spheres and Sphere Levels. In terms of time commitment and grinding, this could be the series’ most difficult trophy/achievement.

6 Best Bromance (Final Fantasy VII)

If all the grinding and battling we’ve experienced up to this point has got you down, here’s something a little more light-hearted. Final Fantasy VII’s many fans will be familiar with the date scene that takes place at the Gold Saucer, in which Cloud gets to have a brief moment of fun with the party member he’s closest to (not all of them are available) before things go south very quickly.

You may know that Barret is an option as Cloud’s date, but you might never have seen it happen. All kinds of dialogue options throughout the game up to this point influence the choice (unseen ‘affection points’ with characters are raised and lowered by the player’s choices), and it’s tough to raise Barret’s points high enough without following a guide. Do so, however, and the Best Bromance trophy/achievement is yours.

5 Perseverance (Final Fantasy X)

Now that we’ve enjoyed a fun date with the gruff-yet-lovable Barret, let’s have another change of pace. Here comes Penance, the infamous superboss of Final Fantasy X.

Firstly, the player needs to defeat the Dark Aeons in order to unlock this battle, which is quite a feat in itself. You can then take on this 12 million HP behemoth. It has two different forms, those tricky regenerating arms, and deadly attacks like Judgment Day (which you’ll want to prevent at all costs since it can deal max HP and max MP damage to the party). It’s a contender for the hardest boss in the series.

4 Hail To The King (Final Fantasy IX)

Via: Final Fantasy Wiki

Of the trio of PS1 re-releases, Final Fantasy IX probably has the most difficult trophy/achievement list to conquer. As fans will remember, the game is chock-full of curious little minigames (racing Hippaul the portly hippo-boy in Alexandria, for instance), lots of which have a trophy/achievement attached. Of those, Hail To The King is the most notorious.

To unlock this one, the player needs to hit a run of 1000 jumps in the jump rope minigame (thereby picking up the King of Jump Rope key item). The difficulty of this one is going to vary on a case-by-case basis (it’s largely a matter of timing), but if you just can’t get a handle on the minigame, it’s an insurmountable task.

3 Lightning Dancer (Final Fantasy X)

Via: YouTube (The Platinum Boys)

That’s right. If you’re an experienced trophy/achievement hunter and fan of the series, Hail To The King may well be the bane of your existence. That is, one of them. Lightning Dancer is probably right up there too.

Back with Final Fantasy X, now, Lightning Dancer is awarded for successfully dodging the Thunder Plains’ lightning strikes 200 times in a row (without saving or exiting the area). Much like the previous entry, this one’s become quite notorious in the community: it’s all about timing and reactions, making it a breeze for some and an utter nightmare for others.

2 Treasure Hunter (Final Fantasy XIII)

Many gamers are familiar with that unique, wonderful feeling you get from achieving 100% completion of a given game. Oftentimes, there’s no trophy or achievement attached to doing so, we just want to see every inch of a favorite title.

If you’re really dedicated, you’ve probably shot for the Treasure Hunter achievement/trophy in Final Fantasy XIII. This requires you to have (or have had) every single weapon and accessory in the game in your possession. With all the upgrades and such that are required, it’s a truly daunting task.

1 Sweet Perfection (Final Fantasy X-2)

Via: iMore

Speaking of the dedication needed to achieve 100% completion in certain games, here’s a real doozy for you. Final Fantasy X-2 is a very convoluted title, especially progression-wise. Sweet Perfection may not be everybody’s pick for the most difficult achievement in the series, but it’s highly likely that it’ll be up there.

As you’ve surely guessed, Sweet Perfection requires nothing less than 100% completion. Missing a single scene, piece of dialogue or something like that can cost you progression, which would be devastating. Without a very detailed guide, this would probably be all but impossible.
