One of the shock surprises of E3 2018 was when Xbox boss Phil Spencer revealed Halo: Infinite. The game was introduced with a beautiful trailer full of epic shots of the landscape and its wildlife as well as a look at Master Chief (who will be returning in the game). Although details were scant, the forthcoming title already looks quite ambitious.

Halo: Infinite is an ambitious game, so much so that series developer 343 Industries is drafting in another studio in order to help out with development. In a press release posted to its official website, developer SkyBox Labs confirmed that it will be co-developing the PC and Xbox One title. SkyBox will work on features "across the game," explains the press release, including Halo Infinite's AI, gameplay, networking, as well as its "cutting-edge" graphics features.

SkyBox Labs already has some experience with the Halo franchise under its belt. The developer was also responsible for the Xbox One X enhancements for Halo 5: Guardians, making the game look crisp and clean for the souped-up hardware. SkyBox also created map maker tools, Halo 5: Forge. Although Forge wasn't a main series' entry, it did give Halo fans a substantial amount of new content to enjoy and will have been a good way for SkyBox to get to grips with the franchise and what players want out of it.

Some Halo fans may be skeptical about Halo: Infinite having a co-developer. The two development teams will have to communicate well and keep each other in the loop about everything – something which can be difficult on a game of this size. It may be hard enough for 343 Industries to pull this off, without making sure that an entirely separate development team is on the same wavelength as well.

But some may be delighted that 343 is getting some help, given the apparent scope and scale of Halo: Infinite. For starters, the game will be powered by a brand new game engine, meaning that much of the development will be ensuring that the tools work correctly and do what they need to do to drive the game's quality forward.

On top of that, Halo: Infinite is also rumored to be open-world and there is even some speculation that the game may have a battle royale mode to rival Fortnite and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. If that is the case, the workload for the developers is going to be immense, and so it makes a lot of sense why 343 Industries has asked for a helping hand.

Halo: Infinite will be released on PC and Xbox One. A release date has not yet been announced.
