Halo Infinite was announced today at Microsoft's E3 conference, and it led off the presentation with a trailer that both revealed the name of this next entry in the main Halo series and teased some of the new Slipspace engine powering the game. Since that reveal, the studio head of 343 Industries' FPS projects, Chris Lee, confirmed that Halo Infinite will be a Master Chief story.

Lee makes direct mention that the developers heard the feedback from fans who played Halo 5 and did not like switching between playing as Locke and Master Chief. Because of that, Halo Infinite will be played from Master Chief's perspective, focusing on the main protagonist of the franchise:

"The team also heard feedback loud and clear on the amount of time spent playing as the Master Chief in Halo 5. In Halo Infinite, the game will focus on the Master Chief and continue his saga after the events of Halo 5."

This should be great news for hardcore Halo fans, who as mentioned, did not enjoy how much of Halo 5 focused on Locke and his squad over Master Chief. From Lee's comments, it appears that the game will return to its roots of Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 3, and Halo 4 that were stronger narratives from the Master Chief's perspective. Although Halo 4 had its own faults, particularly on the multiplayer side, it did have a strong story campaign that delivered a dedicated narrative about Master Chief (a.k.a John-117), so 343 has pulled it off before.

In addition to the narrative, Lee also went into detail about the art style, saying that it will lean fully into the style fan-favorite lead artist, Sparth:

Halo Infinite will feature Sparth’s (Art Director, Nicolas Bouvier) new art style that draws significant inspiration from the most iconic and historic parts of the Halo franchise and your feedback, all while modernizing and taking advantage of the full power of the Xbox One family. The new Master Chief helmet directly showcases our new art style.

It looks like the engine demo and announcement trailer Microsoft showed at the conference is likely all that will be seen of Halo Infinite during this E3, but everything that has been shown so far has been music to fans' ears. Although, 343 will have a lot of time to keep proving themselves as they show off more of the game in the months to come.

Halo Infinite has yet to receive an official release date.
