A new rumor has begun to gain traction that could mean that huge changes are coming to Halo Infinite that may redefine the future of the series. Pertaining specifically to Halo Infinite's multiplayer, it seems like 343 Industries' next title in the Halo series will include some features that are new to the franchise, but popular among other multiplayer titles.

The rumor comes from a product description for Halo Infinite at Smyths Toys, which gives a slight description as to what players can expect when the game releases. Similar to the recent Mega Construx toy set that may have hinted at the death of a major character from previous games, this product description could be informed by 343 Industries and Microsoft.

As fans are excited to see more from 343 Industries, and possibly even get a Halo Infinite beta test, Smyths Toys seems to have revealed that the upcoming multiplayer will be free-to-play on Xbox Series X. Along with the free-to-play format, the game will also be coming with a Battle Pass system and customization options beyond anything that Halo has offered before. This means that the multiplayer will be coming in a similar way to the Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone systems, bringing a new, widely available experience to everyone who gets the Next-Gen console.

In addition to being free to play, the next Halo is also intending to boast that it will be aiming for 120fps when it launches on Xbox Series X. This will likely be the same for both the multiplayer, as well as Halo Infinite's single-player map, which coincides with Microsoft's early spec details for the Next-Gen console. From what this new information suggests, along with other rumors circulating, it looks like 343 Industries is looking to make the largest game in the series, for both the single-player campaign and multiplayer.

This free-to-play system may explain how 343 Industries intends to keep Halo Infinite going for 10 years, by beginning with the upcoming title as a base and improving the game over the course of multiple seasons. Considering how many games have taken this tactic in the last few years, from Fortnite to Valorant, this might be a great way for the Halo series to reinvent itself for modern gaming. With the last title in the series being almost five years old, attempting something new could be exactly what needs to be done to both make an impact for the series, as well as the launch of the Xbox Series X.

Halo Infinite is in development for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
