Microsoft was full of surprises at E3 2018, keeping its showcase moving at a fast pace while focusing largely on upcoming games. In addition to revealing major third-party titles like Devil May Cry 5 and Cyberpunk 2077, Microsoft also showed off a few first party games which included Forza Horizon 4 and the mysterious Halo Infinite. While the short teaser trailer showed off Master Chief, it didn't do a good job of letting fans know exactly what the game was. Two months later, fans finally have an answer as Microsoft confirms what Halo Infinite actually is.

During a recent Mixer broadcast, 343 Industries' own Jeff Easterling went on record to confirm that Halo Infinite is indeed Halo 6, the next chapter of the long-running story. Speaking to fans during the latest 343 Social Stream, Easterling said that fans shouldn't think of the upcoming game as a prequel story; it is intended to be the next piece of Master Chief's story even though it doesn't follow the same numbered title sequence of previous games.

While details and gameplay are still scarce, Microsoft has previously revealed that Halo Infinite intends to move back to its roots by focusing the story solely on Master Chief. Halo 5: Guardians surprisingly split most of the campaign between the aforementioned Chief and newcomer Agent Jameson Locke and his Fireteam Osiris. Naturally, this perspective shift proved to be a point of contention for fans who wanted to spend more time with the legendary Spartan. 343 clearly received a ton of feedback on this topic and appears to have acquiesced to fans' wishes.

Ultimately, the impressive E3 teaser primarily gave fans a quick look at the new game engine being used for Halo: Infinite named Slipspace. As to what the game actually is, no one outside of Microsoft is entirely sure with speculation revolving around the idea that it could be an open world game or that it'll join the growing trend and include a Battle Royale mode. One of the biggest rumors, however, is the idea that Halo Infinite is being developed in two parts with the single player side arriving next year and multiplayer following a year later in 2020.

Halo Infinite will be released on PC and Xbox One. A release date has not yet been announced.
