The unveiling of Halo 5: Guardians early Friday morning brought with it a ton of anticipation, as gamers considered the future of Master Chief’s saga on next-gen consoles, but also a lot of questions. And while we assume a lot of those answers will likely come at Microsoft’s E3 Press Conference in early June, 343 Industries has already begun teasing one of the game’s biggest mysteries.
By now most have seen the box art for Halo 5: Guardians, which includes an image of Master Chief and another armored soldier split by the game’s title. That image alone, featuring a mysterious subtitle and a mysterious figure, has been enough to spark a heated debate among gamers wondering who this person might be.
An early assumption based on past Halo story developments (specifically the ending to Halo 4) arose that suggested this mysterious character was Cortana, Chief’s A.I. companion. The blue visor and the potentially feminine design of the armor led to speculation that Cortana’s A.I. had somehow made its way into the physical realm, and was now represented by the soldier seen on the box art.
Those who didn’t buy into that rumor considered another possibility: that this was a new upgrade for Master Chief’s iconic Spartan armor. Of course, many die-hard fans cried blasphemy at the idea of changing up Master Chief’s armor. It didn’t matter that the box art image seemed to evoke the top soldier’s reflection being that of Master Chief, now is not the time for radical redesigns.
One final theory suggested that the armor belonged to Sarah Palmer, one of the main characters in Halo: Spartan Assault and a role player in Halo 4‘s co-op focused Spartan Ops campaign. Palmer, like Chief, is outfitted with her own Mjolnir armor, making her another prime candidate for the mysterious soldier.
However, as it turns out, none of those three prevailing theories are correct. 343 Industries‘ Josh Holmes took to Twitter to squash most of the rumors circulating the Net by explaining that this armored soldier is a completely new character created for Halo 5: Guardians. And it’s a he.
While Holmes wouldn’t say more than that, the admission does lend credence to a fourth theory surrounding the soldier that claimed he is one of the ‘Guardians’ or a representative for the mysterious beings. Thus far, we know very little about the Guardians aside from some peripheral details in secondary Halo lore and their presence as boundary protectors in multiplayer matches.
It’s pretty reasonable to assume this character is a Guardian, but there’s no proven evidence that confirms he is. All we know is that he is a completely new character for Halo 5: Guardians. Could he be a new co-op partner for Master Chief? Is he the primary antagonist? Hopefully 343’s confirmed presence at E3 2014 will clear up some of the mystery surrounding the character.
Who do you think the other box art soldier is? Would you prefer they be someone from previous Halo storylines (i.e. Cortana, Palmer)?
