John Carpenter’s 1978 horror film Halloween is one of those movies that almost anyone, horror fan or not, has seen. The franchise has continued to grow, being one of the longest horror series to this day. The franchise consists of twelve films, along with novels, comics, and a tremendous amount of merchandise.

David Gordon Green's 2018 Halloween was a pretty significant success, and Green’s controversial sequel Halloween Kills was released in October 2021. Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) is still trying to kill Michael Myers after all these decades, yet he never seems to be able to die. In Halloween Kills, Myers somehow doesn’t die again, but there is an upcoming sequel Halloween Ends, set to release in October 2022. Many fans are curious if this next film is a goodbye to the franchise. Will Halloween Ends finally be a farewell to the iconic series?

On that fateful Halloween Night in 1978, Tommy Doyle (Brian Andrews) and his babysitter Laurie (Curtis) were stalked by Michael Myers and are still haunted by him over 40 years later. In Halloween Kills, the hunt on Myers continues, as an angry mob is led by Tommy Doyle (now portrayed by Anthony Michael Hall), who continues to chant, “Evil dies tonight,” but can Myers actually die? There have been numerous theories pointing to Myers being immortal, which would make sense considering he has survived just about everything at this point.

The film begins with firefighters going to Strode's house which is on fire. As they begin to light out the fire, they end up accidentally releasing Myers, who then brutally kills them. Laurie, her daughter Karen (Judy Greer), and her granddaughter are sent to the hospital, where they learn of Myer’s killing spree.

When Strode awakens in the hospital bed, her voice states: “I always thought Michael was flesh and blood like you and me, but a mortal man could not have survived what he’s lived through. The more he kills, the more he transcends into something impossible to defeat.” Even Laurie herself is pointing to the fact that Myers cannot be human, as there is no way he could have survived fires, car accidents, stabbings, along with numerous other massacres.

So what’s going to happen with the franchise? Horror franchises never really end, so it is difficult to know if Halloween is really coming to its completion. The Child’s Play saga had a massive remake just two years ago and the new show Chucky is currently on SYFY which is already a huge hit. Scream is releasing the 5th film in their franchise in 2022; The horror film lists go on and on.

So, will Halloween Ends finally be the film where Myers is gone for good? When interviewed for Cinema Blend, producer Ryan Freimann's stated: “I have not thought that far ahead. Right now, we're in the midst of what we see as the [director] David Gordon Green trilogy. And the story, like with the Rob Zombie films, it had these little offshoots. They had done Halloween III: Season of the Witch way back then, so it's like we're living in the moment with these films that are successful, and we'll see where it goes from there. I hope there is a theatrical experience. The future is still in place, but for right now, yes."

If the Halloween Ends title rings true, this could officially be the final film in the now 12-movie franchise. If this is indeed the ending, and Myers is capable of dying, it seems that the only person to get rid of him for good is no other than Laurie Strode. Some other theories are floating around, though. In Halloween Kills, there is a small backstory discussed that could point to who could actually be the one to kill Myers once and for all. In the film, it is revealed that Deputy Frank Hawkins (Will Patton, Thomas Mann) was the officer who tracked down Myers in 1978. Because of this, he didn’t allow Dr. Samuel Loomis (Donald Pleasence/James Bartholet) to kill Myers, instread putting him into custody. With this four decades-long regret and guilt, could Hawkins finally be the one to take revenge on Myers and kill him?

At this point, fans and franchise fans want Laurie Strode to live a good and normal life after her traumatizing encounters with Myers. With Halloween Kills ending with her daughter getting brutally murdered, Strode seems to have even more of a reason to kill Myers; perhaps, her and Hawkins can team up together in Halloween Ends to complete Myer’s 4-long decade terror. It is a well-known fact that John Carpenter did not want to make the series about just Myers and only co-wrote the second installment Halloween II (1981), so the crew could move forward with or without his help. Maybe Carpenter can finally get his long wish of Myers not being the forefront of the series in Halloween Ends, but we’ll just have to wait and see when the film hits theaters on October 14th, 2022.

Some fans wish for an ending to Laurie Strode’s adventure and hope she gets the closure she deserves, while others aren’t ready to let go of the Halloween franchise. The final film is called Halloween Ends, so it could possibly be the last film... for now.
