Half-Life: Alyx made shockwaves when it was announced earlier this year, with Valve finally confirming it would revisit the Half-Life franchise in a VR setting. Fans are naturally incredibly excited to see where the series will go next, yet, unfortunately, the significant portion of Half-Life players on consoles won’t be able to see the franchise’s return firsthand. Alyx is, after all, a Steam exclusive. However, it appears that could eventually wind up not being the case.

Speaking to Push Square, Valve designer Greg Coomer talked about whether the game could see a port to PlayStation VR, which, surprisingly, he didn’t shoot down entirely. While Coomer admitted that the prospect isn’t currently on the cards as Valve’s “very focused on the initial release” coming to Steam, he also stated that, “Sony’s VR platform has been a huge success for the medium, and we assume that lots of Sony customers would love to experience this new chapter of Half-Life”.

He finalizes his statement by clarifying that while the game is primarily focused on making its way to Steam, the team has "not ruled anything out." It’s far from a confirmation, but it’s interesting to hear that Valve is considering bringing Alyx to PSVR for the console's owners to enjoy. No doubt the large number of PlayStation players who first experienced The Orange Box back on the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 would love to see the next chapter in the series, which Valve could make a reality through porting the game to the PlayStation 4.

It seems as though the next iteration of the franchise will be a big deal for VR as well, with numerous sources citing that Valve’s next take on the series will attempt to revolutionize the technology. With PSVR being one of the more common and affordable headsets on the market, it makes sense to eventually port Alyx to the system in attempts to widen the audience getting their hands on the franchise’s next big entry.

Until then, it appears Steam players will be the first to experience Alyx and finally step back into the world of Half-Life. The game already appears to be lined up to become a sensational success, with Valve’s headsets reaching shortages due to the unbelievable demand for the VR spinoff. Whether the game leads to a resurrection for the beloved series remains to be seen, but it should be one of 2020's most important releases regardless.

Half-Life: Alyx will be released for PC VR platforms in March 2020.
