A fan of Valve’s 2004 classic Half-Life 2 has created the entire plaza from the game in Unreal Engine 4.

An artist by the name of Ivan Fernandez created the entire plaza area where players can board the train station in City 17 at the beginning of Half-Life 2, complete with all the little details. Ivan gives special thanks to fellow artist Jersongaming for HD decals to fill in some gaps. Ivan also used Quixel for some floor and wall surfaces, a service that hosts HD textures and other resources that has been used in games with incredibly rich environments like Metro Exodus, Battlefield V, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and even movies like Disney’s live action remake of The Jungle Book.

This isn’t to be confused with a different remake of Half-Life 2, known as Project 17, which is a remake of the game using the engine and assets of VR game Half-Life: Alyx. Ivan’s remake is utilizing Unreal Engine 4. Coincidentally, both projects only have the goal of recreating the opening area of the game, including the train station.

Hopefully someday one of these two remakes of the opening scene of Half-Life 2 can be extended to a remake of the rest of the game, in the same way that the long-gestating Black Mesa did for Half-Life 1.

With all of this excitement surrounding the Half-Life series as of late, many may wonder if and when Valve will release Half-Life 3. A recent documentary hosted by gaming’s own Geoff Keighly revealed how Valve’s development process took it from Half-Life 3 to Half-Life: Alyx.
