Daybreak Games' free-to-play battle royale title, H1Z1, may have just released on PS4, but it's not all good news from the company, as its has officially announced that the game's online survival mode, Just Survive, is being retired.

In a letter posted on the official website, the team stated that the decision was a difficult one and, while there was plenty of dedication from the community and promise for the game, there simply weren't enough people playing it to keep maintaining development. This is especially apparent when you realize that H1Z1's battle royale mode has a much larger player-base, with the game's open beta having over 10 million players.

The team wrote:

"After careful consideration, we’ve made the difficult decision to sunset Just Survive on Wednesday, October 24 at 11am PT (7pm UK time). The excitement of the game’s promise was palpable and its loyal community is still full of ideas for its future. Unfortunately, we are no longer in a position to fulfill its greatness and the current population of the game makes it untenable to maintain."

After giving thanks to their devoted fans, the team confirmed that Steam purchases and in-game transactions have already been suspended. They also provided a link for any players that feel like they are eligible for a refund. Anyone who thinks they should get a refund for Just Survive can click here.

The letter concluded with, "Thank you for taking the time to play the game, to help test it when we opened the Test servers to the public, and for all of the suggestions and feedback throughout Early Access. We truly appreciate everyone’s commitment and your contributions throughout the development process. Our promise is to do better and learn from every experience along the way."

"Just Survive was part of our first Early Access project, and we learned a great deal during its development," the post said. "We hope everyone had amazing adventures across Pleasant Valley and Badwater Canyon."

Although Just Survive was an early version of H1Z1 (with Daybreak Games splitting it into two different games a few years ago), its closure won't affect the battle-royale mode, which will continue to receive regular updates.

H1Z1 Just Survive was in development for PC.
