Gwent: The Witcher Card Game's Open Beta Begins Next Week

Today, the developers at CD Projekt Red have officially announced that the digital card game from The Witcher franchise, Gwent, is slated to receive an open beta for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One next week on May 24, 2017. As it so happens, the public test for the aforementioned platforms follows the PS4's beta from a couple of months ago, which was explicitly available to those on Sony's current-generation system.

While this ought to come as good news to those who have been itching to try out The Witcher card game, for those who have been taking part in the closed beta since it began in October of last year, it means that all of their progress is about to be reset. To be specific, both card collections and player progress in Gwent will have their slates wiped clean, and the closed beta period will end two days beforehand on May 22, 2017 so that servers can be prepared for the game's fresh start.

Ever since the announcement of Gwent becoming its own release, many have placed it alongside Blizzard's digital card game Hearthstone in discussions. The comparisons aren't necessarily due to the gameplay of both the titles being the same, but more so because the latter currently dominates the digital card game market on mobile and PC. However, with Gwent being put out for consoles, it means that The Witcher card game stands a chance at reaching an audience that Hearthstone can't touch, potentially angling it for greater success.

All things considered, with CD Projekt Red letting anyone download and play Gwent on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One soon through the open beta, there's a good chance that it could captivate gamers who already enjoyed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and it has the possibility to draw in newcomers as well. After all, many believe Gwent to be one of, if not the best mini-game of all time, and with the card game being expanded as a full-fledged release all its own, it has a great opportunity to make some decent waves in the gaming world.
