Twisted Pixel announced a new motion control game utilizing Microsoft’s hot selling Kinect, titled The Gunstringer. Twisted Pixel found a place in most gamers hearts, when they released Splosion Man back in July 2009 for download and since have gone on to release a total of five games to date.
Their creativity and ability to think outside of the box, has brought us new innovative gameplay and has made all of us who played Comic Jumper laugh out loud at least a couple times.
Last week Twisted Pixel drew back the curtain on a game they have been developing, and no, it wasn’t Ms. Splosion Man. It was The Gunstringer for Microsoft’s Kinect, which stars an undead puppet cowboy on an epic trek for revenge against the rag-tag puppet posse who put him six feet under in the first place. Now here is the kicker, all of this goes down in a stage-play fashion with you as the puppet master and a crowd following along during the story cheering and jeering.
So essentially, its your very own riveting puppet show full of skeletons, cowboys, six shooters, and strings.

Consider me sold.
As you can tell from the trailer above, Twisted Pixel is taking The Gunstringer out to the old west, and blending 2D and 3D graphics in a very cartoon-like art style that has become a benchmark for their games’ visuals.
Twisted Pixel’s Gunstringer Lead Designer Dan Teasdale said:
“Through a bunch of on stage performances, you get to marionette the Gunstringer through an awesome western themed revenge story filled with action, drama, and mildly creepy puppet love.”
Yeah, this is unmistakably a Twisted Pixel production.
The trailer suggests that all of the gameplay is gesture based, and played with slight movements of the hand. We will have to navigate The Gunstringer through a side scrolling ravine one minute and then focus on shooting enemies using a very Rez-like approach at targeting, the next minute.
Teasdale also added:
“As you may have already gathered, The Gunstringer is unlike any Kinect game you may have played previously. There are no minigames, forced gestures, or end of level photos of you in your underwear here. You can play it sitting down, which is great if you just want to play and relax rather than burn crazy calories. Most importantly, you can aim and move with precision not seen in any of the Kinect launch titles, and with a speed and feel that’s just not possible with a traditional controller.”
Another welcome piece of info, is that this game was developed to be able to play while seated! Something that most fans of the Kinect are likely very excited to hear. This is also tangible proof that there are teams and companies out there looking to develop motion controlled games outside of the recently targeted family audience – by making a game that utilizes Kinect’s potential, yet still appeals to more ‘hardcore’ members of the game community.
Both of Twisted Pixel’s projects Ms. Splosion Man and The Gunstringer will be available to play at PAX East 2011 in Boston, MA. The Gunstringer will be available for download on XBLA sometime in late 2011. No word yet on Gunstringer sequel, The Gunstringess* but check back later for more information.
*Disclaimer- No such game has been announced by Twisted Pixel or anyone else for that matter.
What did you think of The Gunstringers trailer? Do you think Twisted Pixel has finally made the game that sells the Kinect to the most of the hardcore fans?
