There are times in our lives when we try to do what we thought as a good thing, but then everything suddenly takes a turn for the worse due to no fault of our own. That is pretty much what happens to Miorine in episode 19 of Gundam: The Witch from Mercury.

In her effort to increase her chance to be the new president of Benerit Group, Miorine and Guel decided to come down to Earth and held a peace talk with the local people. Unfortunately, she quickly realizes that she just willingly and unknowingly let herself caught in a complex web of lies and tragedy.

A Naive Girl

Gundam Mercury E19 Miorine Earthian Meeting

While it’s true that Miorine is certainly a compassionate person that can empathize with the suffering of others, the main reason why she decided to visit earth and try to negotiate a cease fire between the Earthian protesters and the Spacian armed forces is without a doubt to increase her chance to become the new president of the Benerit Group. So it’s clear that her decision to intervene in the ongoing conflict on earth comes from a rather self-serving intention.

That being said, Miorine still tries her best to understand the problem that the Earthian are currently facing, and offer what she considers to be a reasonable compromise. Needless to say, the Earthian representatives flatly refuse her proposal. Not only that, they counter it with an even more absurd demand. “Every Spacian has to leave the Earth,” they said. In their eyes, a girl like Miorine who has been blessed with a comfortable life won’t be able to understand their pain and suffering.

Not one to give up easily, Miorine convey her vision of developing her company’s medical technology and her intention to brings their invention to earth in order to help the people who need it. She manages to convey her passion, beliefs, and honesty to the Earthian representatives. Thanks to that, while they won’t accept her proposal, they are willing to cease fire until the presidential election is over. If Miorine manage to become the new president of Benerit Group, then they will talk to her once again.

All things considered, the meeting ends up quite fruitful to Miorine. However, the thought of being betrayed never once crossed her mind. She would never imagine that people who are close to her would use her to achieve their personal agenda. She is much too naive. And that naivety cost her everything.

Enemy Within

Gundam Mercury E19 Aerial Take Off

When the government decided to hunt and destroy the Gundams decades ago due to the danger that this technology poses to its user, there are actually people out there who see the potential of this advanced war machine. Those people are the Ochs Earth, the parent company of the Vanadis Institute where Prospera used to work, and an organization called the Space Assembly League.

These people not only continue the research and development of the Gundam based on the data that they get from the vanquished Vanadis Institute, they are actually in the process of mass-producing the Gundam. As a matter of fact, the Gundams that are used by Sophie and Norea during the attack on Plant Quetta are actually produced by these organizations. As the one who is part of the original members of the Vanadis Institute, Prospera absolutely despises what this organization has done.

To Prospera, Gundam is the product of the blood, sweat, and tears of her fallen comrades, and yet these people intent to take it all away and use it for their own benefits. That is absolutely unacceptable, and she will do everything in her power to destroy this fake Gundam. And that is the main reason why she goes to earth with Miorine. So as soon as she sees the opportunity, Prospera launched Aerial’s jamming system, and hacked into one of the rebel’s tank in order to make it fire the first bullet. In the midst of the chaos, panic, and explosions, she flies to the Space Assembly League’s secret bunker nearby, and destroys every fake Gundam there.

Everything Falls Apart

Gundam Mercury E19 Miorine Bad News

Thanks to Prospera’s action, the Earthian representative accused Miorine of deceiving them. They think that causing all of this chaos and massacre is Miorine’s true intention of coming to earth. At that point, the negotiation has broken down and any hopes to salvage it quickly dissipate as the bombing, the fire, and the scream of innocent people fill the sky. Despite her rather selfish and self-serving intention, Miorine did wish to bring some resemblance of peace by coming to Earth. Unfortunately for her, what ends up happening is the exact opposite of that.

Miorine unknowingly brings the devil with her, and now countless people lose their lives because of her decision. Forget trying to become the new president of the Benerit Group, Miorine has now become the public enemy number one on earth. In just a couple of minutes, everything falls apart. The only way for Miorine to come back from this terrible development is by capturing the true perpetrator of this violent incident, Prospera, and the man who kick-started this chaotic turn of events in the first place, Shaddiq Zaneli. Will she be able to do that? Only time would tell.
