New Guitar Hero Bundled with Soundgarden Album

Fans of music and music-oriented games have most likely been paying attention to the next big thing in Activision's line of Guitar Hero games, Warriors of Rock. Like any music game the track listing is the most important part (aside from the peripherals themselves).

Guitar Hero has been trying to keep up with the support-heavy Rock Band franchise for a while now. So what's their answer to superior gameplay and content? A hastily thrown-together track-list (or so it would seem) with little rhyme or reason.

Harmonix has consistently been raising the bar in the plastic (and now real) instrument genre. Where as Activision seems to think that new songs are enough to warrant a brand new retail box. I know that music tastes differ from listener to listener but, to me, it seems like Activision was reaching with this list.

Maybe I'm out of line and Activision did loads of research in the rhythm game demographic, or maybe their hearts just aren't in it anymore, but the list is simply uninspired.

I'm willing to admit that there are a few truffles in the offal, but who is their target demographic here? An aging high school football star from '83 who still thinks mullets will come back if he "just rocks hard enough"?

Once again, I'll probably be letting this one float past, on down the already crowded river of Guitar Hero games - as I paddle towards the safety of Rock Band 3. It's my firm belief that Activision needs take a serious look at how they can innovate in the genre and if they need to take a break from Guitar Hero for a bit in order to do that - I'm all for it. Otherwise, they should just stick to releasing track packs or band-centric games- instead of taking a half-hearted step up to the next level.

Feel free to disagree and let me know how you feel about this tracklist in the comments.

Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock is due for release on September 24 and will be available for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii.
