Players eagerly awaiting Cyberpunk 2077 are going to have to wait a bit longer. CD Projekt Red is delaying Cyberpunk 2077 until December 10, and many are not taking it well.
Obviously fans are disappointed by the delay, even though it's only for 21 more days. Their disappointment stems from Cyberpunk 2077 being probably the most-anticipated upcoming game at the moment, and it seems to extend beyond players into companies like Arc System Works as well. This may have been the reason that Arc System Works' official Twitter created a post making fun of the delay, which it has since deleted.
Arc System Works has issued a formal apology for the tweet. Responses from commenters have largely been confused over the reason for the deletion, or stating it was unnecessary. This is what was tweeted originally, poking fun at Cyberpunk 2077's delay post:
The joke is not particularly offensive, and is not particularly funny either. However, in light of the death threats CD Projekt Red devs have been getting because of the delay, making fun of it does seem to be in poor taste. While a major hoopla was probably not warranted, Arc System Works' apology is commendable.
Many of the complaints directed at Arc System Works are not over the CD Projekt Red tweet and apology, but rather that this has not happen more often. Specifically, many are upset that Arc System Works was willing to retract and apologize for its former licentious behavior. Many tweets from Arc System Works were focused on sexualizing and drooling over female characters from its games, similar to an uncomfortable situation from SNK's Twitter regarding Samurai Shodown. Comments point out that thirsty posts are often more harmful to the community than a joke that doesn't land, and has nothing to do with Arc System Works' games.
The delay has been hard on many, from the developers to players eagerly awaiting Cyberpunk 2077. It adds a new sting to the already problematic crunch situation at CD Projekt Red, and stirs up bad feelings all around. It probably didn't help that the Cyberpunk 2077 devs found out about the delay at the same time as players.
It seems that Arc System Works' Twitter has returned to its more relevant posts. While community gags can be fun, it's probably best that not every Twitter attempts the kind of humor some have made work. Considering Guilty Gear Strive was also delayed by COVID-19, Arc System Works probably shouldn't be throwing stones in the first place.
Cyberpunk 2077 is slated for release on December 10 for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions in development.
